TELESAR V, a telexistence robot system being researched at Keio University, aims to free people from time and space constraints by using remotely operated robots to interact with the remote environment, reports (http://www.diginfo.tv/2011/11/07/11-0225-r-en.php) DigInfoTV.
The operator uses a 3D head mounted display that covers the entire field of view, to see exactly what the robot can see, and also hear. The sense of touch, recorded using force vectors and temperature data obtained by the robots sensors, is also transmitted to the operator, allowing them to feel the shape and temperature of objects.

Um, that's great and everything, but can I use it to remotely drink a beer -- ???

This will be great for some cyber lovin'. And of course all other ways of avoiding physical contact, and yet feeling it at the same time :)

What if I fall in love with the robot because *it* feels what *I* feel -- ?

You people do know that in this case the robot has no autonomy of it's own and acts merely as an extension of the human body, right? So the hackneyed references to cliched Hollywood movies (not exactly known for their scientific or technological accuracy) are a little, shall we say, off.
Meanwhile in the real world, it's occasionally useful to be able to manipulate objects that aren't the same room as one. If you need a hint, think of the kinds of places where robotics can endure the conditions better than our soft fleshy frames.

In that case lets not transmit temperature through these things.

Well, that's more than a little condescending. Please don't assume we're all unable to comprehend the implications of this development because we made a few jokes about it reminding us of movies.
C'mon ... give us a little credit here....

the implications of this development
Given the current lack of markets for economic development shouldn't we be *cheering* any technological developments that have the potential to wipe out those pesky non-consuming humans -- ???
