Not sure if this is where I should post this, as it is not my race or sexuality that is subject to discrimination, however, I am curious how widespread this is, and if there are societal safe havens. I am an atheist, socialist, activist for pro-choice and pro-gay marriage, and I live deep in the heart of the right-wing, bible-thumper center of the states. There is a precious handful of youth like me in my school, but otherwise, we are outnumbered 600 to 1, and the ostracizing ranges from silencing us few to straight violence. Are there areas where this is not the case? Has anyone had similar experiences within their schools as youth? How did you cope with this garbage?

The north is much nicer in that regard, as long as you stay in the cities. The Pacific Northwest is great because there is practically no Christian Right.
Of course, you'll find assholes everywhere you go. Haters gonna hate.

Yikes. What a poor geographical situation for you. :(
Come to Australia. Barely anyone I know gives a shit about politics, religion or any of that sort of thing. People pay lip service at religious services, but that's as far as it goes for most.
The majority have totally the wrong idea about communism, but unlike the US (from what I've gathered), they're happy to learn.
Maybe that assessment is the result of my growing up in the backwater part of Australia where people wrestle crocodiles and drop bears haunt the forests, though.
