Do any of you guys have information on the relationship between Isabel Allende and her uncle, Salvador Allende? I have searched the internet, but have found almost no mention of Isabel on her uncle. You would have thought that she would have said something about the former presidente of Chile!
The reason I ask is because Salvador Allende is one of my heroes, and I can't seem to find any mention about him by Isabel. Perhaps she does not want to be associated with him? If anyone has any information, please share it. She was about 30 when the coup occurred, so it would have to be an important event in her life. I would actually like to meet her one day and ask her myself.

Hey there, I'm not from Chile but I am from Latin America (Venezuela.) I have read lots of her works and recommend them to you.
I will tell you right now that Isabel is not a very politically motivated person. After Allende was overthrown, all of Allendes family was blacklisted so she ran to Venezuela, at the time most of Latin America was being controlled by the USA, including Venezuela. (Look up Alliance for Progress.) So she was very quiet about criticizing the USA. When she is talking about politics/society, she cares about feminism more than anything. She is probably the biggest modern feminist writer in the world.
She has no critique of capitalism or US foriegn policy, although I am positive she hates the latter because it made her flee her home. Right now she is writing books in this country, like I said you probably won't find what you're looking for, she's not very politically motivated.

I appreciate the reply Bellera. I do recall that she escaped to Venezuela after the coup. It's unfortunate though how she hasn't ever mentioned him, although I sort of expected it. At least this provides me with some closure.

Edit: This is the ONLY thing I have found where she even acknowledges Salvador. And the sad thing is, she doesn't even refer to him as her tio, rather she refers to him as the president. :crying:

If you read her autobiographical book Paula it contains a lot of stuff on the coup and on her uncle along with a load of other stuff, House of the spirits tells a similar story but doesn't name names. Of all her books I think Paula and House of the Spirits are the most outspoken about her view of the coup.

Isabel Allende literature is really mediocre imo. Im chilean and I have read 2 books about her, I cant say they are bad books but its just basic literature.
