Why wouldn't it be legal? That would be like saying marxists.org is illegal because it has a ton of works that you're not paying for. If it's up there online for you to read in it's entirety, then you're not breaking a law by looking at it.

Some are just novels that sort of thing. ( on a side note, i would like also to get some books on the soviet union on if it was degenerated workers state, or state capitalist, or bureaucratic collectivist, books that discuss those theories) however some are ebooks that you purchase but some people uploaded it to the internet and so i can read it that way. I can read it and copy and paste it onto a word document, and its legal? Would it be legal if i decided to download the pdf itself?
Thanks for the fast reply, btw.

Depends on what country. I don't think the FBI is going to come knocking on your door for downloading a few books lol. You can read, copy, paste it's completely legal. You download music don't you?

Like Broletariat said, you have to worry about copyrights. Copyrights protections expire after the time specified by whatever country you're in. Everything I've seen on Marxists.org has been in the public domain ... there may be some copyrighted stuff up there, but something tells me a Marxist wouldn't give a shit about copyrights.

Where do you live? And since you download music why give a shit about books? They're more likely to get your for music than for books as you're downloading more data.

1. They can't get you for downloading stuff if its not on a P2P network. 2. I have 11,000 books on my computer (all of which were downloaded from P2P networks) and I've never been sent a letter.

If you want to use torrents, get Deluge (http://deluge-torrent.org/) and enable the blocklist, then change the address of the blocklist from "nipfilter" to "pipfilter" in the settings. And make sure it's set to autoupdate on startup, then update once daily. Then force an update.

I use utorrent, have no regrets using it. Torrents are pretty safe so you should just be running your usual antivirus an you'll be fine.

theres some ebooks that you have to pay for. and i read them and it says that they use third party services to check piracy on torrenting sites. Should this worry me?

Nope. Torrenting sites don't actually host the content, so the most they can do is alert the company that the site has links to the actual file. The company will send out a letter, and will receive a response back from the torrenting site something along the lines of "Go fuck yourself."

Mostly Soulseek. But there are a few really good torrents on piratebay that have hundreds of books from university presses. An easy way to avoid viruses is to only download torrents from respected uploaders (those with colored skulls).

Downloading something isn't illegal.
In America (I'm going to assume that's where Savior lives, IIRC he didn't give an answer) it is.
But all you have to do is download Vuze and apply the IP Filter.
Furthermore, if you're downloading books you probably won't have to worry about getting caught since I'm fairly, fairly certain companies don't go after that stuff (doubt they have the resources, and e-book torrenting isn't that big). I believe they only really go after new movies, tv shows, games, and programs. And also, IIRC the RIAA stopped going after people.
A google search shows that the first ever case against pirating books was filed recently.

In the US downloading is a very shady field, and it's not exactly clear whether downloading is illegal or not. Uploading is more of what you should be worried about. On that note, fuck ACTA.

Vuze? Is it better than utorrent? also, one of the books im looking at downloading would normally cost about sixty bucks if i paid for it. (its only available as an ebook). yeah, i live in the U.S, i know its different elsewhere.

it's really a matter of preference which client you use. Utorrent is small and compact but you can use either.

i see, i used to do that for music that was too hard to find on torrents. Don't worry so much about everything :)

Just screw any notions of legality when it comes to "intellectual" resources.

For whatever reason, I've noticed it runs slightly slower than utorrent, but its very easy to install an ip filter plug in.

Not only is it illegal but morally reprehensible and economically devastating to people like Bill Gates and Doanld Trump, who worked all their lives to get to where they are. It is a shameless assault on free enterprise and a threat to the free world as we know it.
To make things right, if that's at all possible, I suggest you e-mail all your best .pdf's to me and turn yourself in to the nearest policeman, you know, the one with large breasts sitting accross from you at the internet cafe...
