For one thing, people are attracted to the idea of living by your own code and your own rules in a society where most of us have to get up each day and pretend to "give a fuck" at jobs that are unfufilling and draining. Well my first impression was that the flower he is holding was an Edelweiss and that it was being implied that he was a Nationalist Socialist. This being based on the fact that Nazi Mountain Troops used the Edelweiss as their symbol and often had to climb the Alps to get their own Edelweiss as a final test of strength.
