I really want to start a LGBTQ group at my highschool because 1)I feel pretty isolated as a bi-sexual male 2)I know there are some other queer students 3)This high-school is in one of the most conservative ares of the country so there is a fuck ton of homophobia. I almost get into fights on a daily basis over homophobic bullshit. The thing is though is that my entire high-school is pretty much terrified of me because I'm "that punk kid from the city" so kids back down and shut the fuck up if I confront them.

I really want to get the other queer students organized into a group. I don't know exactly what LGBTQ groups do though. Ideas please?
I was thinking maybe a type of support group along with spreading awareness and maybe pushing political stuff for LGBTQ rights.

I also wouldn't mind using my "reputation" and influence at school to help make more of an impact against the homophobic assholes who will talk shit to these other kids but don't dare talk shit to me.

An LGBT-Friendly group in a school goes my the name of a "Gay-Straight Alliance", and the official GSA Network website (I'd post the link, but I haven't got the post count :( ) has a fairly short paragraph on what they're for - notably, empowering and supporting LGBT students, as well as LGBT activism to attempt to prevent homophobia/biphobia/transphobia and raise awareness of homophobia and certain holidays (National Coming Out Day, Spirit Day, LGBT History Month, Day of Silence etc.).

That being said, many LGBT groups, rather than putting up posters and activism etc. , simply use the group for meeting up with LGBT people and spend the time playing board games, chatting etc. so, really, it's your choice on what to do.

One key fact you must be aware of is that, if your school holds other clubs, they're legally required to hold an LGBT group if a student requests so, and they can take the issue to the courts if the school refuses.
