Further murders of campesinos in the Aguán

Miércoles 02 de Noviembre de 2011 21:32 International Human Rights Observatory in Aguan

To the International Community and, in particular, to the Honduran People, the permanent International observatory for human Rights in Aguan denounces
The continuation of violations of human rights and essentially the violation of the right to life.

November 1st, the date in which the government of Porfirio Lobo Sosa decided to initiate the Operation Relampago (Operation Lightning) to diminish the wave of assassinations and kidnappings in the country, a group of campesinos, campesinas and children who were coming from a cemetery where they visited the graves of their family members and of the campesino compañeros who have fallen in the struggle, were followed by a patrol of heavily armed security guards working for Reinaldo Canales.

When the guards caught up to the campesinos near the processing plant owned by Rene Morales, they began firing against the group of farmers who were traveling in a Vehicle at around 2:25 pm and assasinated Catalino Efrain Lopez who died instantly meanwhile Jose Luis Lemus and Nilda Funez were wounded by bullets. Jose Luis Lemus is hovering between life and death while Nilda Funes was shot but her life is not at risk.

The campesino group that was attacked belongs to the Authentic Struggle Organization of the Campesinos of Aguan (MARCA) and in the case of Nilda Funez, she is responsable for the Human Rights Commission of the National Front of Popular Resistance in the municipality of Trujillo for the campesino sector.

On one of the occasions in which the Honduran army violently evicted the settlement of La Despertar, they took Nilda’s vest that identified her as a defender of human Rights, they tore it, stomped on it and burnt it and they told her that if she didn’t disappear from the scene of the eviction the same thing that happened to her vest would happen to her; the same thing happened on that day to two other human rights defenders.

Days before, leaders of MARCA complained that the security guards and masked men surrounded the houses of people in the community of La Despertar, Los Leones and that in Honduras-Aguan they had been the object of armed attacks, persecutions and threats.

Also the campesino organization has dennounce that the MARCA settlement was surrounded by guards, police and members of the army on various occasions alter they had reached an agreement with the government of Porfirio Lobo that promised that in 5 months there would be a definitive solution granting to the campesinos 1500 hectars of palm, a deadline that is about to arrive without any hope.

The systematic violation of human Rights reaches a level of ALERT, October 29 and 30 the Campesino Movement of Rigores was militarized again without giving the campesinos access to the zones where they work. On October 30 of this year, guards working for the impresario Miguel Facusse fired their weapons at various campesinos that crossed paths with them a a medium distance in the hours of nightfall.

Also on October 30 a group of police who do not belong to the Xatruch Command captured the chief of security of big landowner Miguel Facusse with prohibited weapons such as the galil and R15 – which are arms that only the police and army use, they freed him in less than 24 hours; the police in Tocoa later said that the weapons were decommissioned weapons that belonged to a coronel in the Honduran army.

The same night when the weapons (that the security guard had) were shown on the news in Colon, the newscaster, Isaac Hernandez, immediately received a telephone call from number, 31900236, probably the telephone of one of the security guards, complaining about why the campesinos’ weapons weren’t shown on the broadcast, and then later there were threats against the journalist.

It has to be recalled that the last week of October, the prosecutor for the Public Ministry in Tegucigalpa denounced the fact that the warehouses of the police had lost 300 military rifles (galiles); probably those are being used by hired assassins, and security guards in Aguan to murder campesinos.

On the same day, October 30 in the city of Tegucigalpa, Wilfredo Paz and Rudy Hernandes, who were at a seminar on human Rights to talk about the situation in Aguan and the Inter-American Human Rights Commission (IACHR) and for an exposition on the installation of the human right observatory in Aguan, in a restaurant call Tierra Libre near Cinefilia. While the conference was going on a a car without license plates passed by slowly every 10 minutes, but no one noticed what was happening.

When they finished we (Rudy and Wilfredo) left the locale at about 8:45 pm, alter walking half a block the same vehicle without plates, with dark tinted windshields, passed and abruptly parked just 20 meters from where we were walking, so, realizing the danger, they decided to return immediately.

The person who took us (Wilfredo and Rudy) away from the area told us that these are the kind of cars in which members of the army travel.
Today, November 1, while we are writing this complaint at 11:30 at night shots from AK47s can be heard half a block from my house, something that is occurring periodically ever since we have complained about the repressive effects of the militarization of Aguan.

Stop the assassination of campesinos in Aguan!
No more military in Aguan!
Stop the systematic violation of human rights!
Stop the criminalization of the struggle for land!
A definitive solution to the agrarian conflict in Aguan is Urgent!
Tocoa Colon November 2, 2011.

Spokesman for the International Human Rights Observatory in Aguan, Northern Coast of Honduras.
