It always asks me, but I never have to put anything in it. Did you sign up in the last year or so?

The last hour actually.
My roommate let me use his number so it's all good.

just make up a number
it should give you an option to do it later as well

Can't because they text you. Just give them your number, it won't hurt really, the government knows everything that they would ever care to know about us.

Well, just be careful with what you post on Facebook. They do make demographic profiles on everyone, and sells this information to third parties (aka anyone interested). And it has stung quite a lot people, either at work, political activism, or worse.
And, it's a principle case.

just as a heads up, this is merely a political facebook for engaging with the local occupy movement that operates primarily through facebook.

Ahh, that's a good idea. Don't make a new facebook. Instead make a page and become the admin of that page. Then hide the admins of that page so no one will know its you, and don't "like" your own page.

I'm sure glad I signed up so long ago, then. I don't even have a regular telephone to use.

Ohh, okay. Yeah I signed up like 2 years ago so it never asked me then. It does now, but always say no. I rarely use it anyways, too many hip people for me :P

The same for a YouTube-account. I don't want to give my phone number to Google FFS.

Face Book is really fucked up when you think about it. It's voluntarily building a profile on yourself, complete with behavioral information and a list of known contacts which government agencies, private entities, and just plain random psycho paths can utilize without expending much effort.
Of course I had one for 3 years and it wasn't till I left that I paused to think about all this.
But if you want to do it, just get a cheapo cell phone pre paid thing and tie it to that.

Not to mention your consuming habits, what kinds of beverages you "like", what kind of music you listen to, what kind of movies you enjoy.
It's a brilliant marketing database.
