If that actually happened, a large detonation would be the only appropriate leftist response.

I hope they try and end ruining the whole thing by accident

Why? I barely care enough to write this post.

How about they just give the travesty back the the Sioux before the federal government does more pointless damage to the black hills?

Isn't it strange than any President post-Keynesian period would be controversial putting next to Lincoln, Roosevelt, Jefferson and Washington?

Carter (maybe), Reagan (no), Bush I (no), Clinton (no), Bush II (hell no), Obama (only liberals would approve).

I could see JFK, FDR, LBJ, Eisenhower, Truman and even fucking Nixon on that thing before Reagan.

1) IIRC there's no more room on Mt. Rushmore for another face, and

2) it's absolutely hilarious that Grover Norquist, famous for being a "libertarian" and claiming that he wants to get government so small that he could drown it in a bathtub, praises Reagan. Reagan presided over a system that was pretty much the exact opposite of Norquist's mythical "small government".

Defense is not government according to right wing republicans.

They provide a "service" according to them so they're excluded from the ire they give to government.

Government = social programs. Social programs do not provide a "service".

I am surprised they haven't said that the other faces should be torn down and just build one giant Reagan face. The love affair with this guy is astonishing.

The U.S. should just invade Nepal, and carve Reagan's face into mount Everest. If anybody complains we will just say Nepal had weapons of mass destruction.

"Republicans want to add Ronald Reagan to Mount Rushmore"

Why in the world would they want to carve a pair of butt-cheeks out of Mt Rushmore?

IIRC there's no more room on Mt. Rushmore for another faceI don't know where you got this. Gutzon Borglum, who was the original sculptor (and also a member of the KKK who carved the Confederate memorial in Georgia) originally planned to carve the presidents from the chest up, and include the Louisiana Purchase, the Declaration of Independence and other national symbols to the mountain. Those plans were scrapped because funding ran out, not because space did (and since the whole mountain was seized from the Lakota anyway it's pretty obvious that more mountain space could have been taken if need be).

Reagan presided over a system that was pretty much the exact opposite of Norquist's mythical "small government".Of course, but Reagan ran on a "small government" platform. What small government means in this cause is massive cuts in social spending and repealing regulation of business.

I agree - doing something like this would be the proverbial two fingers to the Oglala people.

If they decided to blow the place to bits I would support them 100%.

The economic deficit which prevents social revolutions even today is his fault.

The only statue he deserves is one carved on his gravestone.

Then the Democrats can add FDR to Mount Rushmore, and both parties can have their ideological Messiahs on the Mount!

They should take down all of the presidents on mount Rushmore and just put a big middle finger in their place. I mean, what is the difference?

*shrug* I could be wrong about that. I can't remember where I heard that mentioned, actually.

Of course, we all know that "small government" is a sham. But Reagan's spending as a percentage of GDP, over his two terms, fell by about one percentage point. That's not exactly slaying Leviathan, regardless of how you look at it.

Mount Rushmore is already vandalism of what was considered a sacred place by the Native people there. Adding that asshole would be worse.

I can only think of 2 US presidents worse than Reagan - GWB (for obvious reasons) and Andrew Jackson (Genocidal Indian Removal Act.)

I'm just waiting for them to make him "Eternal President" like the North Koreans did with Kim Il Sung. I mean, seriously, just get it over with already. This eternal contest over who loves and worships Reagan the most is making me sick.

Republicans have been pushing for Reagan to be on Mt. Rushmore since he was president. They also want him to replace Jackson on the $20 (Jackson being the only Democrat on currently-printed paper money -- the $2 bill isn't printed any more) and FDR on the 10¢ coin. They have had plenty of opportunities to make their case, and none of them have been able to do so successfully. Expect this to come and go, just as past exchanges on this topic have.

Let them "want to" - it ain't gonna happen - ever!

The rock is too unstable for the remaining cliff side - they had to move one of the original presidential placements while it was originally being constructed due to a fault lines on the remaining faces...

This was discussed ad-nauseum YEARS ago!!!

And it's even more unlikely now than it was then...

And besides, the Obamabots are talking about adding Obama to the cliff face!!! (HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! - take that repukes!!!)

I don't think so, while almost every American president has committed a crime against humanity, Teddy Roosevelt let lots of progressive legislation pass, Washington defeated the imperialist English, Lincoln ended slavery (even if he didn't care that much) and was arguably a syndicalist/socialist, and Jefferson had policies that favored the poor agricultural farmers over rich industrialists. Not that I'm saying any of these guys were humanitarians, but they're nothing against Reagan.

Why the fuck didn't we restrict the guy who's name is Semper Fidelis from the start. I'm pretty sure that's the marine corps slogan. Again why do we waste time keeping the obvious restricts around for a while when we ban legitimate members in the blink of an eye.

I love the irony of modern Republicans and right wingers supporting Reagan, despite the fact that the tax rate under him was much higher than that of Obama, and Obama is a Socialist! It was much higher than that under Eisenhower in the 50's. Also, he believed in Astrology, which needs no more to be said.

I wonder how much money will be spent on this monstrosity?

I am also assuming that the Republicans want the state (ie: the taxpayer) to cover this, whatever happened to 'balancing the budget'? Seems conservatives don't mind wasting taxpayer money on a statue but anything that is of actual benefit to people (social security, free healthcare) and you will have them screaming about 'wasteful government spending'.

Regan did not fix the oil crisis, a combination of more fuel efficient cars and an oil glut brought prices down to mere cents per gallon.

Nor did he vitalise the economy; even as far as post-war growth in the U.S. goes, it was more or less Brezhnev stagnation until the last years of the Raygun presidency, when there was a speculation boom with no real benefits for the workers of the world, which soon ended in an economic crash.

A few years ago, I stopped at a post office on the outskirts of a city to buy some stamps. The worker asked me what kind of stamps I wanted. I said, "Anything but the American flag." She paused for a second, then said "How about Reagan's face? That's even worse!" and laughed.

Are you kidding?? My family and I lived in a shack with plastic sheeting for windows and dined on the finest in powdered milk and welfare cheese as a result of the massive economic boom that came along with Reaganomics!
