..from a Conservative academic from New Zealand (Kenneth Minogue).

"It is characteristic of the conservative temperament to value established identities, to praise habit and to respect prejudice, not because it is irrational, but because such things anchor the darting impulses of human beings in solidities of custom which we do not often begin to value until we are already losing them. Radicalism often generates youth movements, while conservatism is a condition found among the mature, who have discovered what it is in life they most value."

Your thoughts?

If that is what conservatism is, then conservatism does'nt exist in the "conservative" movements in the United States, or the UK, the "conservatives" in both countries are radical in their desire for plutocracy, tyranny of wealth, and destruction of traditional values in exchange for market and propertarian values.

This is coming from my American perspective: Conservatism frustrates me. The ideology itself when done correctly is for limited government, personal responsibility, slow[er] change, and an emphasis on state rights over federal government. I can accept that there are people that have rational arguments for conservative politics. The problem is the types of people that tend to rise to popularity in the Republican party really makes me wonder. The amount of religious influence over the Republican party, the outright rightist extremism of it's propaganda machine Faux, and the Tea Party scares the shit out of me.
