going through che-lives, ive seen that a lot of you are pro-gay rights, which i am too. not to make anyone mad or anything, but in cuba, homosexuality is a crime and all homosexuals are sent to work camps.
ive read that fidel himself is extremely homophobic.
what do you think of that?? and does anyone know what che thought about homosexuality??

In determining things like this, it is important to sort out imperialist myth from what is really going on in Cuba, and it is important to analyze the Cuban government OBJECTIVELY (although I think Castro is a huge revisionist). Thus, unless one can find proof within the code of law of the Socialist Republic of Cuba, it is best to take such claims with at least a little grain of salt. After all, like I said, these could be Imperialist lies.
The problem with a lot of Guevaraist movements, however, is that there is a strong ideal of the "macho" man. Women typically do the cooking and other "women's work," and where there is constant talk of "proving your manhood" and "having huevos." So there is a basis for possible homophobic feelings in Guervaraist/focoist ideology.
However, the main question is: how is the problem of homophobia going to be dealt with OVERALL? How are we gonna stop the persecution of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, and Transgendered individuals in this society? These are questions for everyone to ask themselves and their comrades.

Good questions, Andrei...
On Fidel being homophobic... I have heard that he used to have a big problem with that, but that he has improved somewhat over time.

I'd love to hear some more responses to confirm this. This is a bit off topic but I heard a story once that a tourist wrote "the government sucks here" and he was incarcerated for about a month.

Btw, another off topic question but I read on this forum that Fidel is Catholic?

Today, on my college's chat program "FirstClass" (or FRED), I was called gay, because I believe that Intelligence is more important than sexual promiscuity.
Fucking Meathead whiggers.
Isn't it great that we live in an age where smart people are called "gay" by complete morons.

That helps me clarify life in Cuba quite a bit. Although I wouldn't suggest buying Gay Cuba and Strawberry and Chocolate together for fear of being tormented by the postal man.

Gay Cuba???
Strawberry and Chocolate???

Please, Victor, read the page. (Again.)
The documentary Gay Cuba which looks at the issue of homosexuality in the revolution. The other being the feature film Strawberry and Chocolate which did most to open up the debate about homosexuality among the Cuban population (it was incidentally the only feature film that the Cuban state could afford to sponsor in that year). The latter film is showing at Cornerhouse later this month.
Both are also available to buy from CSC.

I'd like to know please. Thanks.
Also, gay rights are progressing here in America. I don't think it's fair to always use such propaganda.

If anyone has seen the movie 'commandante'-basicaly a 2hr interview with fidel, he comments on it about homophobia saying though it was fround upon [by society] it is becoming more and more widley accepted.
Dont think he's catholic, i meen Cuba has only just started celebrating Xmas in the last 5 or 6 years (i think they started again in '97-correct me if i'm wrong). I think this -assuming it is a myth or misconception comes from the popes visit to cuba around this time, which Fidel was delighted with, mainly because the Pope spoke badly of the evils of the american trade embargo.

hmm ive never heard that story about the tourist before... nowadays fidels desperate for tourism so i dont think hed do that anymore at least
and fidel actually is/was catholic. he was brought up in a very catholic home and sent to an expensive catholic boarding school in havana (where he was made fun of for his "country manners" and his dirtyness). he was never really an atheist, but never especially religious. when che and fidels brother raul convinced fidel to make cuba a socialist republic (fidel started off the revolution with no real political ideas), fidel decided that it would be best for socialism in cuba if he were to totally give up his religion.
lately fidels been leaning towards catholicism again. in 1991 catholics were officially allowed in the communist party. fidel worked hard to get the pope to come to cuba, and he has been allowing more and more freedom of religion.
this isnt exactly recent but it tells some stuff about catholicism in cuba -

I believe the Popes visit to Cuba and the denouncement of the American embargos was embraced by Fidel as a means to show the turmoil his country is facing as a result of such sanctions. Such an influential person speaking to a massive amount of dogmatic followers on the injustices that Cuba has had to face as a result only produces positive results.
From what I've read, though, Fidel himself is not Catholic. Atleast it's never mentioned.
