An international group of online hackers is warning a Mexican drug cartel to release one of its members, kidnapped from a street protest, or it will publish the identities and addresses of the syndicate's associates, from corrupt police to taxi drivers, as well as reveal the syndicates' businesses.
The vow is a bizarre cyber twist to Mexico's ongoing drug war, as a group that has no guns is squaring off against the Zetas, a cartel blamed for thousands of deaths as well as introducing beheadings and other frightening brutality.

Unless the computer has a gun, then we're all fucked. On a serious note though, why shouldn't they do this even after the Zetas release the hostage? Wouldn't it help damage the cartel?

sounds like they may have called the operation off, citing potential risk to their members:

Too bad, Anonymous hackers versus Mexican drug cartel would have been hilarious.

That's really too bad, it would have been interesting to see how it all unfolded, not to mention being a nice form of pushback against the cartel.

Why on Earth would they want to tackle the most brutal dangerous cartel in Latin American history? These guys are not just a bunch of drug war lords, they're ex-military trained in the US counter terrorism squad that has countless connections in local government and law enforcement. I am sure they can muster up their own hacker too.
I would understand the other cartels, but the Zetas are not to be messed with like that. Didn't they already, in a short span of time, rise up to be the number two in the drug trade right behind Sinaloa?
That's because they're coming into this armed and ready like a tactical squad.
Either way, I think they're (anonymous) fucked for messing with them and threatening them in the first place.

For lack of a better expression, the people releasing that info have balls of steel. Call me a coward but I would never do anything that could remotely piss the cartels off, they fucking murdered a woman and hung her disembowled corpse from a bridge just because she wrote bad stuff about them on a blog.

The Zetas are really fucking horrible. My wife is from the Rio Grande Valley and there are gruesome photos of Zetas killings on the front cover of Spanish language newspapers all the time.

I am sure they can muster up their own hacker too.
According to Stratfor, that's exactly what Los Zetas were doing. Trying to get their own hackers to dox and identify the relevant anons.
