I am Pro-Phoice when it comes to abortion, and I am also going to be a vegetarian starting on October 31. I just feel kind of odd supporting abortion but then abstaining from eating meat for ethical reasons. Is anyone else a Vegetarian/Vegan and also Pro-Choice? What is your response if someone asks you how you can be Vegan/Vegetarian and Pro-Choice at the same time?

Unless you accept the idea that abortion is murder (which would be the usual anti-abortion line), then there is absolutely no issue here. Justifying a pro-choice position alongside Veganism is the same as justifying a pro-choice position.

Meat is murder. Abortion isn't.

I am not a vegan, but I am not against ending life as such (after all, you need to end life in order to continue to survive, such as plants for subtsenance and shelter). However, what you kill begins to take a more ethical issue if it is self aware. I have not seen evidence to suggest a Zygote or a fetus is such.

It is an issue not of ending life, but ending an individual.

Animal sexual activity =/= human sexual activity.

Humans engage in sexual activity most often because it feels great and they want to. Animals engage in sexual activity (mostly - some exceptions) in order to reproduce and further their gene pool.

Hence the entire question is faulty because the two forms of sexual activity are very different. So before you attempt to compare human abortions with eating meat/eggs, you need to understand that meat/eggs don't come about by accident or against the will of the woman in question.

Also, the question of pro-choice/pro-life is one of a woman's right to her own body and her right to choose. It has nothing to do with 'life' or anything like that. It's her womb, her body, her reproductive organs, and her choice. The question of vegan/vegetarian/pescetarian/carnivor is entirely different and revolves around a series of moral debates and scientific data.

So yes, you can be a vegan and be pro-choice.

Meat is murder?

MMMMMmmmmm Murder... /drool/

Seriously though, why would you be conflicted with this, the two beliefs don't collide. You aren't eating a fetus...are you?

I was a vegan but I only did it because of health benefits and stuff. So yeah, pro-choice.

I'm vegan. But my beliefs about abortion are complicated.

I am pro-life* but I'm also pro-choice at the same time, which tends to piss a lot of people off. Abortion is a terrible terrible thing, but like any sensible person I do not think it is ok to outlaw abortions, I think it would be worse for people(especially women) if it wasn't allowed.

When I defend abortion, I also point out the drawbacks of not providing condoms, birth control, and proper sex education which leads to this issue. On a very related note: I am dismayed by schools that teach an abstinence based sex-education.

I do not feel that my veganism is opposed to my attitudes regarding abortion and those who are trying to equate the two are trying to kafka trap you. Your stance about ethical diets and reproductive rights are seperate issues

*What pisses me off is that the pro-life crowd is right but for the wrong reasons which is the same thing as being wrong.

I think we will soon be able to grow human animals outside of the body (like in the matrix), which would solve not only the abortion problem, but many others as well.

the main reason i am vegan is because i am against genocide, especially just to profit an industry. however, i am also pro-choice, because i see abortion as a preventative measure rather than murder. i don't think that taking an extremely basic and undeveloped life is the same as murdering masses of animals for our convenient consumption.

What are you talking about?

Yes,the first involves humans (or "semi-humans"?),the second involves animals.

First, as a male, I feel that my OPINION is null and void from the start for the discussion of abortion.

A woman's body is hers and hers alone. Period. And only a woman has the right to decide on the issue of abortion.

What should have primacy - the woman or the fetus? That would be the inherent question.

If I were a woman, I wouldn't want anyone - especially a man - to tell be what I can or cannot do with MY body!

It's really that simple.

The abortion debates - to me sitting on the outside looking in - is about men wanting to control a woman's body. Period.

And it has NOTHING to do with "life" - for if it did, then once the woman had a child, then the anti-abortionists would literally be fighting over who would SPEND THE MOST RESOURCES TO RAISE AND NURTURE THE CHILD instead of ignoring the child once the woman is FORCED to have the child.

An anti-abortionist ONLY has a "love affair with the fetus".

Period.

The woman of course.

That would be the inherent question.

But many anti-abortion activists are actually women...right?
