I've heard different things about it, from it being just like the CPSU to being ultranationalistic.

How similar is it to the CPSU? How much Marxist-Leninism is in its doctrine? Is it even a little M-L or does it just nostalgic for when Russia was a superpower and uses the logos from the time?

It has a religious background and a heavy nationalist leaning. Also, it was accepted into the Duma, so that pretty much says it all.

KPRF today is essentially a party that supports the government but pretends it's not to channel popular discontent (kind of like a vaguely left version of Zhirinovsky's Liberal Democratic Party that is actually a sort of nationalist, conservative and almost fascist morass, a right-wing political grave yard) in a controlled manner that poses no threat to the ruling class. It's leadership is as communist as the Communist Party of Moldova, i.e. not at all.

It's not a communist but a socdem. party with hammer and sickle flags.
It's one of the best examples of treachery in the worker's movement.

This.

The Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) is ideologically speaking, a social democratic party with a heavy influence of Russian ultra-nationalism and anti-semitism.

Should the CPRF ever come to power (and I hope they never do) chances are they will look to modern China as an example of 'constructing socialism'.

In the event of a social revolution, the working class in Russia would do well to treat the CPRF as the outright class enemies that they are.

So they're kind of like the US Democrats, a veal pen for the foolish who think there can be 'progressive reform"?

They are closer to the CPUSA. The Democrats are an openly capitalist party and don't bother hiding it, the CPUSA claims to be a Marxist-Leninist party, but have become very reformist.
