I dont care if you like gaddafi or not, fact is no one should be glorifying what is essentially the imperiallist assassination of a third world leader, accompanied by someone sticking a knife up his anus while people shout 'allahu akhbar' . but according to alex callinicos this is a great step on the path to liberation.

absolutely disgusting. i talked to the guy on facebook, he even denied that there was a genocide of black libyans (despite a whole black town being wiped off the map, as the rebels proudly admit). I used to have some respect for him, but honestly I now have none at all. This is nothing but opportunism and willful ignorance, glorifying a thoroughly reactionary movement, while adding a few 'ohh but we dont support nato bla bla' statements as if it makes a difference, as if there is some magical invisible force within the rebels fighting for democracy, despite everything suggesting that they are a bunch of islamists, white supremecists, and comprador bourgeoisie.

I feel this statement is worth bringing to your attention, Zenga, though no doubt it will hold few surprises. Neither the Swp statement........are they still peddling SHARIA law onto ingrates. I recall many muslim women and particularly ex muslims spitting feathers on the matter. Although our dear ARCHBISHOP of CANTERBURY gave his full backing. ALONG WITH SUPPORT FOR ANTI BLASPHEMY LAWS. Attacks on freedom of speech.

The title line -- "West’s role in dictator’s downfall shouldn’t stop us celebrating" -- is wrong! Wrong!
This is the same line as liberals, who say "I may not agree with why we went into Iraq or think we had noble motives, but Saddam was damn bad so we basically did a good thing."
Wrong!
The instant we got involved militarily, it became reactionary, because we supplanted the Libyan people's power, with our bombs.
Gaddhafi was bad -- sure, unlike what some idolizers of Gaddhafi think, that is the truth. He was a reactionary. Doesn't mean you should "cheer" for US Imperialism! Cheer for the Libyan people, however imperfect their movement, sure, but not US bombs by and for the world's leading Imperialist power.
With the US as the driving force, the results can only be continued misery for the Libyan people. That's nothing to cheer about.
I am somewhere in the ideological neighborhood of Trotskyism but I find this disgusting.
Against Imperialist military aggression!

Why is he calling teh USSR 'Communist'?
I mean, surely even supporters of the USSR (or especially supporters) would use the term 'Communist' in such a loose sense. I despise people who use the popular bourgeois colloquialism Communism in place of its actual marxist definition.
But yeah, ridiculous article.

Gaddafi was a scum bag, no one disagrees. The SWP supporting this doesn't suprise me, but they suggested it was better than a trial by the Libyan people!? WTF....

Callinicos would probably like this to happen to John Rees.

The SWP is a disgrace to Trotsky and Trotskyism as well as the whole left.

The real question is how anyone familiar with Callinicos and his ilk, and their actions through history, could be surprised by this at all.

I'm quite contented to know that none of the various leftist parties in existence will ever have any relevance to the self-movement of the working class. The SWP is no exception.
