Neo never left the Matrix

I'm having an argument over the meaning of the Matrix films. I'm saying that Neo never left the Matrix and that "the real world" is in the Matrix as well as the virtual world they visit. That explains how he is able to use his powers in "the real world" and how he can see with no eyeballs and such. Is there any merit to my idea or have I got it totally wrong?

I always viewed Neo as Jesus(Reincarnation, Being brought back to life, prophecy that he will return and be the savior) and the fact that the Oracle said that the abilities of the One extends to the other world.

It might also have something to do with with the connection between Smith and Neo that could lead back to the machines?

I've always supposed that Neo had some specific connection with the sentinels perhaps being augmented like in Deus Ex.

Neo was "the chosen one". He was portrayed as some sort of Messiah to humanity in the movie. There was a prophecy and everything.

So Neo had powers in the material world as well as in the Matrix.
