View Full Version : Cheap computers preinstalled with Ubuntu Linux

Just thought I'd spread the word to my fellow leftists.

For anyone interested in a more secure, more stable computer that doesn't get viruses...

http://www.system76.com

They sell laptops, desktops, and servers preinstalled with Ubuntu Linux ... it's like Linux for beginners, but is perfectly functional and a great operating system. I've never ordered from them, but they were mentioned on a geek web site I read often.

Looks like their cheapest desktop is $400. That's pretty good.

Remember peoples, with Linux your computer's software updates are always free. You're never forced into buying a $150 upgrade every 2 years like with Microsoft Windows ... or with Apple OS X. And, like OS X, you'll likely never encounter a virus or malware of any sort. It does exist for Linux ... it's just rare. Linux is so stable, my desktop hasn't been turned off in 3 months and it's just as fast as if I just booted the computer up.

Plus, the entire open-source movement is essentially socialism in practice. From each according to his ability, to each according to his need ... those who can, write the software and give it away for free so that those who need it can use it. Plus, it's some of the highest quality software in the world.

The only deal with Linux is ... it's not that great for gamers. Anyone else it's fine. Graphic designers, artists ... great. Just not gamers.

I'll vouch for Ubuntu, it's a good operating system and in the past I've used it at my work on a daily basis. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's pretty damn good. +1

Well I'd GO FURTHER in saying that it is actually anarchism in practice and not socialism

Windows is terrible quality software. Why you would bother even pirating it is beyond me.

If you want easy access to viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, adware, memory leaks, buffer overflows, undetected errors, etc then there are hardly any better choices then Windows.

o well this is ok I guess

I disagree, I think Windows 7 is a good quality OS. It's Windows Vista that was terrible.

As for viruses, Avast! is a good free anti-virus program for Windows and it very effectively helps block viruses.

Microsoft's reluctance to code a true multi-user operating system leaves it susceptible to many different types of attacks that multi-user OSes like Apple's OS X and Linux are immune to. The fact that you need anti-virus software should tell you it's shit.

Something tells me you're not a serious computer geek. Nearly all agree that Windows is shit. Windows 7 is an improvement ... but still shit. Windows 8's further embrace of 'the cloud' is going to lead to huuuuge data breaches and personal information leaks ... they can't even get the standard OS right, what makes anyone think they could properly secure off-site storage for private information and other data...

Windows has been shoddy quality since the very beginning ... not just Vista.

o well this is ok i guess: yeah, that's the only reason I could see anyone bothering with Windows. That or if they're a big corporation who got sold by Microsoft reps and nifty powerpoint presentations about "productivity" and "corporate synergy"
