I've often heard it said that "what distinguishes the capitalist mode of production from those that preceded it is production for exchange." I'm still unclear, however, as to whether the aim of communists is to abolish this type of production or not. If so, what will replace it?

Production for use.

Production for use while correct is a bit vague. I think of this way, currently we go to work and come home with nothing but a wage that is worth less then the labor we have just preformed.

In communism this won't happen, you are not just there for a wage, you are there because you want to consume part of what is being produced, thus under communism production would revolve around producing utility for workers to consume.

For example lets take housing, a communist planned economy would not see a flood of housing in the USA, it would see homeless and conclude more homes must be build, as the supply of homes exceed the demand (of course a communist economy also wouldn't let housing sit idle while there is homeless). In this example the workers making housing wouldn't be doing it make their master surplus value, they also wouldn't be doing it for a wage but to satisfy society's need for housing.
