1. Is there any possibility such a thing could happen in the next ten years, and if so:

2. How would the political situation in Europe change? Would we go back to the late 19th and early 20th century with tensions between neighbors or would it stay more or less the same except with independent economies and different currencies? Would there be failed states?

Within the next ten yeas? Possibly. I mean, this last decade has been a roller-coaster ride and the Euro has only been around for 12 years and the union for a little longer.

As for repercussions. Some european states may try to reassert their own imperial powers and aspirations. Some may align with the US and there may be a revolution or two an a failed state.

The longer the EU lasts, the harder the fall will be.

EU collapse within a decade? Not sure. Eurozone? Definitely.

Nothing will collapse in next 10 years. Capitalism is quite strong and with the help from national states, political elites and protective economical trends (maybe even some kind of a corporativism) it will adapt to new contidions. Of course, all real problems will never be fixed, but still it takes much more to take capitalism down.

The EU ain't going to collapse, the Euro on the other hand may well see some changes - perhaps with the currently collapsing 'fringe' economies being chopped off and a new Eurozone based on Germany-France-Benelux coming about.

Greece is on the verge of collapse, Spain, Italy and Portugal will follow within a few years. Add this to the impending global collapse that will probably happen before 2014, you'll have conditions worse then what we had during the Great Depression. Western Liberalism is on it's dying breath, and the system cannot, in any way, continue on sustaining itself. A Europe-wide EU is a failed project.
