Most Awkward Moment Ever...

I just got back from a 'family reunion' thing (I have a fairly big family) at my grandparents' house, I don't want to spend ages blabbering on about this so here's what happened...

Before I say this, to avoid confusion, I will make these things clear:

- My mother's side of the family is Jewish
- My uncle is German, he isn't blood related, he's married to my dad's sister.

Basically, we were in the living room (he was a bit drunk) and my dad and my other uncle cracked a joke about Germany losing WW2 (lol) and then out of the blue, the German uncle turned around and started saying about how Hitler 'did so much good for Germany' and other stuff like that. I asked him about the holocaust and he sort of shrugged it off, for the next 20 minutes or so he was talking about 'how bad the Jews were' and 'what they did to Germany' and how 'National Socialism was and still is a brilliant idea', I was just sat there feeling extremely awkward, not wanting to say that I was a Commie Jew.

What should I have done? And what should I do?

Yeah, I'm a little surprised no one on your mother's side of the family spoke up. Granted, I've been in situations like that with my father's side of the family (albeit nowhere near what your uncle said). I'm still a little hesitant to openly state to them that I consider myself an anarchist/libertarian socialist, if only because I have a few uncles who can be violently angry over the smallest politicial differences. It sucks, but I make do. I'm sorry to hear your uncle's something of a nazi - as if family reunion's weren't awkward enough...

What I am wonderig is where is your jewish side of the family in all of this. What did they do?

My parents are divorced, the only people from my mother's side who were there were my younger brother and sister, and I doubt they even know that they're half Jewish - I doubt they even care :rolleyes:

Somehow, I don't even think my dad knows that my mother's side is Jewish.

On a more serious note, I would recommend allowing your uncle to find out you are Jewish through your dad, have your dad tell him. And then, I would advise to keep your communist identity to a minimal around him, you know, not to cause any problems. He's not worth your time.

I have a similar experience. My entire family are southern folks. Some of them are racist.

My cousin, my father and I were riding around running errands one day a few years ago. Somehow my cousin started talking about school segregation. He said that schools should be segregated by ethnicity because students at homogenous schools do better.

I said "Hold up one second, dude. My high school was extremely diverse. No one 'race' made up more than about 25-30% of the school. I went to school with Germans and Chileans and Thai and Pakistanis and Japanese and Canadians and Ethiopians and Gambians and Indians and Bangladeshis and Russians and Bulgarians ... the students were from EVERYWHERE. The school had, in my freshman year there, one of the highest average GPAs and one of the highest average SAT/ACT scores in the state. And it's a public school in a working-class area with around 25% of the population below the poverty line."

That got him to change the subject.
