Texas is one of the most, if not THE most, reactionary states in the US. Enough to eat is a basic human right. And don't foget innocent people go to prison (and are even executed sometimes) - especially in states like Texas.

As the weak economy continues to hit cash-strapped city and state governments, some are passing the costs on to prisoners.
More than 20,000 Texas prisoners have been eating two meals a day (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/21/us/texas-reduces-weekend-meals-for-prisoners.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all) on weekends since April, in a bid by the prison system to cut food-service costs, The New York Times reports.
The two-a-day weekend meal plan is part of an effort to cut the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's budget by $2.8 million; other cost-cutting measures include giving prisoners sliced bread instead of hamburger or hot dog buns and offering powdered milk instead of carton milk, according to The NYT (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/21/us/texas-reduces-weekend-meals-for-prisoners.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all).
The Department of Criminal Justice cuts are part of an overall plan to slash spending in Texas (http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/05/28/3111691/texas-budget-with-15-billion-in.html). Legislators passed a budget that reduced state spending by more than $15 billion and cut 5,700 jobs in the state, the Star-Telegram reported.

Meanwhile, the USA continues to be the only country where weight gain is a huge concern (http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=305422) for those going to prison.

They also revoked the Last Meal for prisoners on death row.

In Texas they like to kill 'em hungry.

Jesus Christ I only eat 2 meals a day usually every day and you don't see me complaining. I mean seriously you act as if they are starving them or something. Ridiculous. I mean fuck Texas but giving them 2 meals a day on weekends is the least of my concerns.

To be fair, Texas is a pretty cool state and it will become more liberal as it rapidly urbanizes. The most conservative areas of the state are losing population, so I think these kinds of things are just the conservatives freaking out trying to mantain power for just a bit longer.

Texas is a state that brags about having the highest rate of executions in modern history, I wouldn't get too cool on them.

Yeah, it's weird that a ''small government state'' brags about the state offing so many of its own citizens. But this is all about demographics. The death penalty's days in Texas are limited as more Latino Catholics start voting. 'Course we might get some even weirder laws dealing with abortion, but I suppose you've got to take the good with the bad.

Hell, I'll go further. Texas will become a Democratic state (once again) within two decades and the Republican Party, as it stands now, will have no chance of ever winning a national election ever again. Not when Texas and California and New York are in the D column.

What this will do is create at least a slightly saner political climate in Texas and nationwide in regards to stuff like the death penalty, abortion, etc. because the social cons will become politically irrelevant.

Didn't a lot of Latino voters vote for GW Bush in his first election bid?

Anyway, the GOP will certainly adapt. I lived in Texas for a brief spell (about one and a half years), in Austin, and it was a nice place. I forgot that I was living in Texas.

Cash-strapped city and state-governments?
hahahaha... well, that's funny. Besides some cities in the Great Plains (Omaha, Des Moines, Fargo), almost every city in Texas is well off! Low unemployment, oil money, etc.
