So Socialism is about the co-operative control by the workers of the machinery of production.

My question is that if democracy is eventually run as was intended 'of the people, for the people'. Would state ownership of a company be the same as a socialist run company.*

I'm guessing not but I'm not really sure what the difference would be if the state was truly democratically run.*

Is the difference that socialist run companies are only ran by the people who work at that company and nobody else in society has a say while in state ownership (in a perfect world) the state i.e everyone has a say in how the company is ran.*

Anyway first post, as you can see I've obviously got alot to learn. Thanks

Correct, the holding of the means of production in common.

"Of the people, for the people" is not "by the people, is the people".

No because socialism has no state.

I'm guessing not

You can tell us why?

but I'm not really sure what the difference would be if the state was truly democratically run.*

Because production would be in the hands of the state for the people and production would not be in the direct hands of the people.

That's more like anarcho-syndicalism

and nobody else in society has a say while in state ownership (in a perfect world) the state i.e everyone has a say in how the company is ran.*

That's not really what's supposed to happen. Production would be for social use instead of private use. If a workshop made something completely useless that nobody would want or operated in such a way that no one liked, then I have no idea how that workshop would exist for any length of time. To say that everyone has a right to say how something is run would be a bit clunky. Does everyone know how to operate a water treatment plant or how to make a car for instance?

No problem.

That's really news to me, because state-less Socialism isn't Socialism, it's called Anarchism.

you need to read some Marx

start with this http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/ch01.htm
then try this http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1847/11/prin-com.htm

"The terms anarchist, socialist, communist should be so "mixed" together, that no muddlehead could tell which is which. Language serves not only the purpose of distinguishing things but also of uniting them- for it is dialectic." June 9, 1886
