If you're concerned about Google's associations with US intelligence agencies, you may be inclined to use Gibiru (http://gibiru.com/about-gibiru).

Alternative Search Engine http://gibiru.com/images/M_images/pdf_button.png (http://gibiru.com/about-gibiru/48-alternative-search-engine?format=pdf) http://gibiru.com/images/M_images/printButton.png (http://gibiru.com/about-gibiru/48-alternative-search-engine?tmpl=component&print=1&layout=default&page=) http://gibiru.com/images/M_images/emailButton.png (http://gibiru.com/component/mailto/?tmpl=component&link=aHR0cDovL2dpYmlydS5jb20vYWJvdXQtZ2liaXJ1LzQ4L WFsdGVybmF0aXZlLXNlYXJjaC1lbmdpbmU%3D) Earlier this year, dead birds in Arkansas and all around the world had been a hot topic of discussion. Google became increasingly incapable of returning valid results for the topic. Their best is regurgitated syndicated content form other news sources that have been so allowed into their highly censored BS news network. Furthermore on the same topic, their sponsored results quality is in the crapper. Search for dead birds and you can purchase any number of discounted dead birds at target.com, eBay or Amazon. Where legitimate News sites like coupmedia.org are forced to pay a premium CPC and suffer low quality score because Google is in capable of handling anything outside of their top 500 profit driving keywords. This is why alternative search engines will continue to capture market share form the major players in the search engine space. Additionally people have become more and more skeptical of tracking and government partnerships of the large search engines. Protect Your Browsing Freedom and Set Gibiru as your Homepage.

Promoting a Free Uncensored Internet
Recently, the NSA has had Google remove "Alternative News" sites that contain content on on the War in Iraq or Afghanistan, on US diplomatic and political scandals (like Wikileaks notorious cables), UFOs, even astro physics. Unfortunately, Google is not alone in working closely to chill Internet discourse. America OnLine, Microsoft, Yahoo and others are slowly turning the Internet into an information superhighway dominated by barricades, toll booths, off-ramps that lead to dead ends and track you everywhere. This censorship is accomplished by geo-location filtering: the restriction or modifying of web content based on the geographical region of the user. In addition to countries, such filtering can now be implemented for states, cities, and even individual IP addresses.
Anonymity and Private Browsing
Gibiru Offers Users Private Browsing of Uncensored Seach Results. Gibiru is presently based on modified Google Search algorithm that breaks the tracking of your behavioral search result filtering and censoring so that you get natural untargeted search results. Gibiru offers different levels of privacy depending on the browser that you use. The following table explains the difference in Privacy a Gibiru user can expect depending on the browser you are using. For Maximum Privacy Gibiru recommends Safari. We seriously discourage the Use of Chrome since it is a product developed by Google and the NSA. Protect Your Browsing Freedom and Set Gibiru as your Homepage.

I would also recommend https://www.duckduckgo.com

Or, if you desire Google's specific search results, https://www.startpage.com (http://www.startpage.com) gives you that while acting as a barrier between google and you in order to protect you.

I haven't thought of using anything other than Google, but after looking at this thread, I'm inclined to continue my Googling ways and I'm seriously considering the options outlined here. Thanks for sharing guys.

I'm all for this, but no SSL? What the fuck? They need to fix that asap if they're about anonymity, security etc.

Good point, but really if you're searching for anything that needs to remain secure you should already be using Tor (https://www.torproject.org/)or another proxy.

Seems they are a bit disconnected with reality ("Real Time Machine Built", "Norwegian Doomsday Vault"). Looks like paranoid conspiracy theorists can do useful things.

I usually use Scroogle.

I checked it out, and I now use this instead of gibiru. I like the set up better and most importantly, it can be fixed to firefox's search engine bar! Perfect.

I use Scroogle and Ixquick, but here's a website with a larger list of Google alternatives. Mind, I can't vouch for the quality of most of them, but it may be of some help (ignore anything else on the website, not worth the trouble):

newmediajournal (dot) us/daily_columns/anti-google_search_engine_index (dot) htm (hopefully you'll be able to discern the website link from this because I can't link any stories as of now unfortunately :()

brawler5k2's post, Now in convenient link form! (http://newmediajournal.us/daily_columns/anti-google_search_engine_index.htm) For it is my duty to help all of the people who can't post links. Especially since that new 100 post rule.

That's a lot of search engines. Which one is best?

^If you're talking about Scroogle, then yes it's powered by the Google. However, it doesn't record any of the records of your searches, nor does it record your IP(s).

Duck Duck Go (https://duckduckgo.com[/url) is a very nice alternative with a throught out userinterface.

Read here (http://donttrack.us/) in what ways Duck Duck Go is different.

And to make Duck Duck Go your default search engine in the Google Chrome address bar (the irony!), you need to do the following:
1. Go to wrench menu > preferences (or options in Windows) > Basics > Manage Searchengines
2. If you've ever been at DDG before, it'll probably be listed in the list. If not, just add it.
3. Restart Chrome.
4. Go back to the menu and make DDG your default

And that's it!

Bump, Scroogle's no longer online. I'm thinking about checking out Duck Duck Go now, is that similar to Scroogle?

DDG is an independent search engine, it doesn't use Google's results.

Startpage (https://www.startpage.com/) is a google-proxy like Scroogle was.
