An alleged racial slur has embroiled two of England's top football clubs. During a October 14, 2011 match between Liverpool and Manchester United, Liverpool's Luis Suarez of using a racial slur against Patrick Evra, a French football of African descent.
What Did Suarez Say to Evra?
According to Evra, Suarez called him a "nigger" at least "10 times.
Suarez has adamantly denied the accusation, writing on his Facebook page: "I'm upset by the acusations of racism. I can only say that I have always respected and respect everybody. We are all the same. I go to the field with the maximum illusion of a little child who enjoys what he does, not to create conflicts." The Luis Suarez-Patrice Evra controversy pits two of the world's biggest football clubs in a game of he-said/he-said.
United coach Alex Ferguson has expressed support outrage at Suarez's alleged comments while Liverpool says they believe the Uruguayan international's claim that he did not use the "N"-word in reference to Evra.
A report in the Daily Mail notes that there doesn't appear to be any Luis Suarez video footage that backs Evra's claims. The Man U-Liverpool match was one of the biggest of the season and there would have been several cameras covering the game from every angle. If Suarez had used a racial slur, it likely would have been captured by cameras.
The paper also notes that the referee did not hear any racial insults. If he had, the offending player would have been issued a red card.

Liverpool have accepted Suárez's version of events and, given the potential repercussions for their striker if Evra's allegations are proven, believe the France international should have a disciplinary case to answer if allegations of this magnitude are dropped.
In 2008 Evra was at the centre of accusations that he was racially abused by a groundsman at Chelsea while warming down. But an FA hearing into the allegation – which was made by a Manchester United employee – found that it was not proven. Evra was subsequently banned for four games and fined £15,000 for his part in the post-match altercation with the groundsman. The controversy comes at a particularly bad time given that Saturday's match launched Kick It Out's three-week "One Game, One Community" action programme, with players from both sides wearing anti-racism T-shirts, and every manager through the leagues wearing one of the organisation's badges.
