WARNING TO YE ALL! CONVERT TO SHINTO AND FOLLOW THY TEACHINGS OF AMATERASU!

OR THOU SHALT SUFFER PAIN AND ANGUISH UPON YOURSELF FOR ALL ETERNITY!

For if you believe not of Amaterasu nor ye dedicate yourself to thy merciful creator Izanami-no-Mikoto, ye soul shalt suffer with eternal torture, damnation, and pain in Yomi, as its disgusting youkai and demon abominations tear apart your flesh and feast upon thee anguish for all of eternity!

But fear not, kind infidel! For if ye convert to Shinto today, love Amaterasu, and praise thee merciful Izanami-no-Mikoto, thy soul will be saved from thee terrible youkai of below!

But do not shun thee nonbelievers. However do know thy will suffer for all eternity shant they not tribute themselves to Amaterasu and Izanami-no-Mikoto! And their wives and children shalt be raped by kappa!

So save yourself and thy loved ones from thee treachery of hell and convert to Shinto today!!

For Amaterasu, Amen!

Oops... Society must think I'm horrible since I'm not a Christian saying this instead...

Maybe my message might sound better if I were to convert to Christianity then broadcast my warning to people on national TV?

That would totally sound better since we all know Jesus and God are good, and we know it to be true, for they are that of purity and light!

Yes, let us replace "Amaterasu" with "Jesus"! That will instantly make my message sound good instead of malicious!

No it's not that. It's just that you classified all people who follow a religion as being like the televangelists on TV. That is a vast over simplification of the whole thing. I'm not a believer by any means but don't think for a second that those asshats on TV represent all the people who believe in some kind of god.

Actually, I'm making fun of the bias society has about hell and saviors. When Christianity speaks of it, we call it "good" and "moral". We even promote it!

But when another religion with different names says the exact same thing...

Shintoism as it is practiced today is heavily influenced by Buddhism and Buddhism does not recognize an eternal hell. Some branches don't believe in it at all and even the ones who do believe it, say it is temporary and only to purge you of negative Karma before you are reborn on earth again. So in that one way it cannot be comparable to Christianity.

I don't even think original Shintoism believes in hell,so your analogy is way off. Also all Christians aren't TV preachers.

Depends on what society you're talking about. Most progressive people would support a person's right to choose their faith (and consequentally their views on hell or a messiah). As far as being "good" and "moral", the morals presented by most religions, be it Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Shintoism, etc are some what similar and there is a lot of good to take away from them. That being said, morals can be found in religion but are not exclusive to religion. :castro:

I never said they were. Technically Buddhism doesn't believe in a "heaven" per say either. "Nirvana" is more of a state of being than a place. And there technically is no god in Buddhism. Which is why Buddhism is compatible with atheism. Buddha never claimed to be god, although he is worshiped as such in certain Buddhist communities.

The fossil "record" is a lie! All life on earth was shat out by a goddess!

It's not a matter of choosing faith. The problem revolves around one thing being considered good and the other being considered bad merely on the basis of involving different names, even when presenting the exact same situation.

It's a bias in western society where Christianity is highly present.

Very true. I consider myself an atheist Buddhist. Though I'll admit I still struggle to really understand what Nirvana really is. I personally have always found the concept of worshiping Buddha be contrary to the spirit of his message, since he said "Buddha's do but show the way."

You seem less evangelical and more strung out after a bad night of drugs.

That's constructive criticism, right?

It's called interfaith dialogue....

It's funny though... in 1930s Japan Shinto (State) was actually forced on people and they were made to visit shrines whether they were shintoists or not.

That has nothing to do with Shintoism. There is no such thing as an infidel. A person doesn't have to profess any belief to take part in any Shinto ceremony or ritual. Anyone who wants to participate can call themselves a Shintoist, or not if they don't want to. There is no punishment for non-belief, and no requirement to praise or worship anything.

Nirvana is a state of mind. It means to be free of suffering and delusion by perceiving dependent arising, emptiness, and impermanence.

Buddha is not a deity and is not worshiped as such. Buddhist "worship" is based on respect and gratitude for the teachings.
