Well, that was fast.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Police arrested around 175 protesters early on Sunday in a downtown Chicago park where demonstrators set up an encampment in sympathy with the Occupy Wall Street movement that sparked weekend demonstrations around the world.

The protests stretched into Sunday in London, where about 250 people set up camp outside St Paul's Cathedral, vowing to occupy the site indefinitely to show their anger at bankers and politicians over the global economic crisis.

The Chicago protests drew more than 2,000 people, while in New York and Los Angeles, marches attracted roughly about 5,000 people each.
Demonstrations were held in dozens of other cities, including Washington, Boston, Los Angeles, Miami and Toronto.

The protests, in Asia and Europe as well on Saturday, were mostly peaceful apart from in Rome, where the demonstration sparked riots.
In London, protesters were gathered in front of the famed St Paul's Cathedral, located next to a square housing the London Stock Exchange.
"People are saying enough is enough, we want a real democracy, not one that is based on the interests of big business and the banking system," protester Jane McIntyre said.

American protesters are angry that U.S. banks are enjoying booming profits after getting bailouts in 2008, while many ordinary Americans are struggling to stay afloat in a difficult economy with more than 9 percent unemployment.

In New York, where the movement began when protesters set up camp in a Lower Manhattan park on September 17, 92 demonstrators were arrested early on Sunday and on Saturday for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, police said.

More than a dozen were demonstrators arrested in Washington Square Park for violating the park's midnight curfew.

In Chicago, the protesters were arrested after they stayed in the city park after it closed and ignored repeated warnings to leave, police said.
Some protesters said they were pleased with the turnout, although some marches were smaller than organizers had expected.

Occupy LA organizer Clark Davis was exuberant over the 5,000 people who marched through the streets of Los Angeles and gathered peacefully outside City Hall.

"Wow, they really showed up," he said.

But in New York, Troy Simmons, a production manager for a health food business, said he was surprised the turnout was not larger.

"People don't want to get involved. They'd rather watch on TV," he said.
It remained unclear if the movement, largely driven using social media, would sustain its momentum. Critics have accused the group of not having clear goals.

The protesters say they are upset that the billions of dollars in bank bailouts doled out during the recession allowed banks to resume earning huge profits while average Americans have had little relief from high unemployment and job insecurity.

They also believe the richest 1 percent of Americans do not pay their fair share in taxes and want a more equitable economic system.

I demand that you stop all efforts to deny Occupy Chicago the use of public space. The city of Chicago must stop all attacks on their first amendment rights to free speech and assembly.

It is in no way illegal to protest, speak out, organize an around the clock protest, sleep outside or setup tents on public space in order to redress grievances against Wall Street and government policies that favor the 1% over the needs of the 99%.

I agree with Occupy Chicago that is unjust to bail out billionaires, while there's an unemployment crisis, people are getting kicked out of their homes, young people cannot afford education and tens of millions are struggling to put food on the table every night.

The October 15 mass arrest of peaceful protesters in a public park was an illegal action undertaken by the city against Occupy Chicago and every person in this city and country. I demand that you immediately halt all attempts to silence and sideline Occupy Chicago.

Occupy Chicago: 130 arrested

By Staff

More than 2500 people gathered in downtown here, on the night of Saturday, Oct. 22. Trade unions again embraced the Occupy movement and committed to turn their members out. Young and old took to Jackson Avenue, taking the entire width of the street as they marched through downtown.

Once arriving in Grant Park, protest organizers stated that they would stay overnight. At 1:30 Sunday morning, Chicago police ordered the protesters leave, but they wouldn't. 130 people were arrested for being in the park after it closed. Many in the crowd stated that they were there and won't go away.

Occupy Chicago at City Hall
Demanding permits for NATO/G8 demonstration, drop charges against Occupy protesters

By Staff

Chicago, IL - The Occupy Chicago movement and the Coalition Against NATO/G8 War & Poverty Agenda (CANG8) came together 150 strong, Oct. 26, to defend the right to protest against war and corporate greed.

When the Chicago Police Department started mass arrests of people occupying Grant Park two weeks ago, cops remarked to those being arrested that this was practice for NATO and G8 in May 2012. After the second round of mass arrests in Chicago Oct. 22, the media were saying it, too.

Now Occupy Chicago has embraced the need to oppose NATO and the G8 when they come to town next year.

While Occupy Chicago has been dealing with over 300 arrests, CANG8 has faced verbal threats of mass arrests and FBI repression from Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, nine months before the NATO/G8 protests are to occur.

In response, on Oct. 26, the two groups together decided to occupy City Hall. The raucous crowd marched in at 2:00 p.m., picketing and chanting, “It’s called the First Amendment,” and “What do we want? Permits! When do want them? Now!”

The first chant supported the demand that all charges be dropped against the more than 300 arrested in the past two weeks. The second chant refers to the demand raised by anti-war organizers since July for a guarantee of their first amendment right to assemble and march against the generals, bankers and heads of state when the NATO/G8 summit occurs, May 15-22, 2012. CANG8 delivered letters and attempted to meet with the city, meeting with silence from the mayor’s office. Then, repeated calls to city officials in charge of the permitting process were met with a run-around and then, with continued silence.

The occupiers moved to the 5th floor outside of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office. Andy Thayer, speaking for CANG8, explained that organizers expectations are “for permits to take marchers to within ‘sight and sound’ of the NATO/G8 summit.” The immediate demands are for the mayor to publicly commit to giving permits to march to the venue of the summit; for Police Superintendent McCarthy to cease making threatening statements against NATO/G8 protesters; and to respond to the protesters within two weeks.

“The ball is in Emanuel’s court,” said Thayer, challenging the city to break with the stigma of repression which has haunted Chicago since the violent police attack on anti-war students during the Democratic Convention in 1968.

Joe Iosbaker of CANG8, and an anti-war activist whose home was raided by the FBI last year, spoke about breaking news that Northwestern University Law School was moving its graduation earlier by a week in May at the direction of the FBI and Chicago Police. Using the call and response known as “the people’s mic,” or “human microphone,” he said, “We all know the FBI lies. They are telling the law school to be afraid of us. I know personally that the FBI lies, because they raided my home last year based on lies.”

The protesters held the first and then the fifth floors for about one hour before ending their occupation, promising to return in two weeks if Emanuel doesn’t meet the demands.

“The G8 and the NATO military alliance are two of the institutions which bear some of the greatest responsibility for the wars and economic violence traumatizing millions of people around the world,” said Pat Hunt of CANG8. “Previous meetings of NATO and G8 in other cities have seen massive violations of civil rights by police, resulting in millions of dollars of successful lawsuits against the host city governments. As such, the city should forthrightly commit to upholding the First Amendment rights of protesters and rein in the verbal threats coming from police brass.”

“In addition to dropping the charges against Occupy Chicago participants, we will also be demanding that the city allow a permanent First Amendment encampment for the Occupy movement, just as many other major cities now do.”
