Anyone know a good one? I'm sick of GMail. I'd like to find one that isn't corporate. Or is my only option getting my own domain

It's impossible. At the most base level, any email service would still be using corporate-owned fiber backbones, routers, etc. The closest you can come is to set up a personal email server running linux/freebsd/openbsd on AMPRNet.

Go into the deep web and find mail service sites. Probably your safest bet, albeit a bit off the beaten path.

If you go with your own domain, check out http://www.prq.to
Based in Sweden, which has stronger protection laws than the US with regard to online activities.
Also, just FYI ... stay far, far away from Hushmail. http://it.slashdot.org/story/07/11/17/1823225/hushmail-passing-pgp-keys-to-the-us-government
