I haven't seen any topics on Scarface here, probably for good reason too, the movie is basicly about a Cuban immigrant, who is a politcal prisoner coming from Cuba and goes from rags to riches through the underground cocaine scene from Miami in the 80's. So if anyone has seen it, I was wondering what your thoughts were about the movie, and how it has effected you if so in any way?

what is rap stars obsession with that movie? and DeNero's character is not an asylum seeker remember Fidel also emptied the prisons and pshchiatric wards, even though he is anti-communist

The movie is a very good movie and it is clear to see that it was ment to target the communist in this nation but when you see the movie and see this man make a "new life" with drugs, what does that tell you?

It targets communist and Cuban immigrants but then it back fires. Sure they show Fidel in a negative way but then you have here a man who turned to illigal money as an immagrant. Used drugs, killed people and all that.

Now what does that say, what do you think this says to people about Cuban immagrants? Their money desprate?

Me personaly, I belive it was a good movie (story line, action, blah blah blah). But then I also belive it tageted Cubans that come to the U$ in a negative way. It was ment to target the communist but achived in only selling a filthy image of an immagrant.

Oh, and to answer your question MXR,

This movie have not changed me in anyway. It is a movie, and it was filmed way back in the day. Times have changed and my socialist beliefs are strong and my communist respect is as high as ever.

As an immagrant from Puerto Rico I look at this movie for the most part fact. There are a lot of immagrants from Latin America that do resort to the drug game such as Tony did in the movie but what the movie does is potray an image that we are all like that. This is not true, and being a communist dosn't make it anymore true.

Could it be said that it also gives Capitalism a bad name? because I do remember Tony saying something about Capitalism when watching a news channel in his tub, something like, "You know what Capitalism is? You get f****d." Anyhow, it's strange, the movie has had a strong influence on the Hip-Hop culture, on both sides good and bad, or underground and mainstream, and so has Che, a communist, although a socialist as well... I think.. I like the movie for personal reasons, like some of the things Tony says "You need people like me, so you can point your f******g fingers and say, thats the bad guy.." I've always felt like the bad guy, just becuase I've always tried to be the good or neutral guy, you know??? Maybe that doesn't make sense but, thats just who I am... a guy with no sense... ;)

If anyone has or hasn't heard of Dead Prez, listen to the opening or intro(Let's Get Free - Album), and maybe you'll understand how this movie has inlfuenced Hip-Hop, or at least it's realtions in some way, I'll explain a little more if I can after some replies...

i thought about this alot..i'm not sure if its anti or pro communist...i think its in the middle.

here's two scarface quotes:

"i kill a communist for fun..but for a green card...i'll cut him real good"

"capitalism....thats when you get fucked!!"

I think it's kind of pro-Castro. Tony Montana was kicked out of Cuba like a piece of trash and proceeded to get consumed by capitalistic greed.

but they try to make him look like a product of cuba.

althought he talks about his time in jail and stuff....they make many of the immegrants look like criminals...i think other then his sister and his mom, everyone else was a drug dealer.

it just reinforces the americian peoples already fucked up views on the cuban people

It doesn't make Cubans look like criminals, it is just being historically accurate. Some of the refugees that left Cuba in 1980 were criminals Castro was happy to be rid of.

It does portray Castro as this evil guy who kicks out all these people but then also shows who he was kicking out. If Pacino is supposed to be the alternative of Castro then i'd take castro anyday. And you have to look at why scarface hates communists...because they wouldnt let him make lots of money by exploiting people. I think tht sens a pretty good message. It is hsitorically accurate and an interesting film. The anti-communist feeling is in the first five minutes of the film, but then also shows the right-wing nature of americans.

it didnt effect me anyway. it had more of an effect as a good film the first time i saw it, but the second time was simple just a good film.

i don't see the connection... one is talking about the introduction of crack into the ghettos by white people on purpose in order to carry out some sort of genocide.
the other is the story of minority who brings cocaine into america directly from other minorities so he can be rich.

there was an album just made called scarface that is a hip-hop tribute to the movie. maybe thats more relevant.

also i thought the movie was not trying to show people what a bad person tony montana is. the goal of the movie is to make the audience love tony while still showing bad things that he did. if you talk to most people who were influenced by the movie they will think tony was cool, which i think why many rappers are attracted to him and pacino in godfather- they think they were just cool badasses. i'd guess its procapitalism for that reason. its trying to make you love capitalism even though you can see somethings wrong with it. didn't you know capitalism is CCCCOOOOOOOLLLLLLL!

I agree with lostsoul, it's sort of in the middle, becuase it starts out with anti-commie, but then later Tony speaks of capitalism as something bad, but anyhow, I just wanted to see some people's thought's since I don't think there is another post about the movie... ;) By the way, what are some of your fav. quotes from the movie

i like:
"say hello to my little friend"

"all i have in this world are my balls and my word..and i don't break them for no one"

"i'll bury those cockaroaches"

i also like saying "i kill a communist for fun..but for a green card...i'll cut him real good" because it confuses people. they see me with many books on marx, mao, lenin, etc...and then at a socialist group meeting, i said that.

i don't think it matters what scarface says...its more HOW he says it.

Roger Ebert has "Scarface" under his "Great movies" category. Oliver Stone wrote the screenplay for Scarface. I like the movie Stone directed "Salvador"---pretty good.

Seriously I have been forced to watch that by my older brother since I was maybe 6...REAL EDUCATIONAL. lol So, I dont like it...think it portrays women horribly and its just unnecessarily gory...I do like the ending but I just don't like violence much if the plot sux balls. That was my take on it but then again I have seen it so much I dont find it great just out of tediousness and repetitiveness..
