View Full Version : I'm getting a tat, opinions?

I'm not sure if this goes here, but what the hell.

So, I', getting a tattoo on 48 hours. I already paid half of it and I'm slightly anxious about the whole deal. I wanted to get an anarcho-communist symbol, and I always liked this one:

Don't call it a "tat". There might be a regional difference due to language in Argentina, but here in the states, no respectable artist uses that term, and it annoys them when you do.

Cool symbol... I used to be in the organization that created it...

Looks fine. How big are you getting it and where? What are you worried about?

I clicked "Submit" by mistake, I just wanted to see the damned preview thing.

I'm getting it on my chest (on the left side, of course!), kinda like that nazi dude from American History X (lousy example, I know). I'm 20 and not very big or anything, so I guess that to fit there it's going to be like, 10 cm, I guesstimate (that's 4 inches), maybe a tad smaller.

Thing is although I think that a pitch black tattoo it's really iconic, like stronger than a colored one, I would like to have a little red in there, for obvious reasons. I was thinking in having the sickle painted red, and the rest of it black, kinda like this dudes profile pic:

www dot myspace dot com/redanarchistrevolution/

What do you guys think looks "stronger" or more iconic?

Sorry for double posting.

I'm sorry, I wasn't aware of that. Here we just call it "tatuaje", as in "tattoo", but whatever.

BTW, what organization created that?

Yeah, its quite possible that its a regional thing, but here "tat" is kind of a trashy way of saying it, and its just kind of an inside the tattoo industry thing. People come in my shop and say "tat" everyday, I don't say anything to them, but it makes me roll my eyes. In other languages it may not carry the same connotation.

RAAN (Red and Anarchist Action Network) created it.

That looks fucking awesome, but it would look better if the hammer and sickle was red, just my opinion :P

My bad, you already mentioned that. Anyways, nice!

And just so you know, the whole tattoo ought to (needs to) be outlined in black, it will hold up better over time.

I like it, I think it's a great looking piece to have done. I'm sure you've thought about this for a while. No?

It's a huge commitment to get something like that done on yourself, especially considering the hostility some ignorant, jack-offs have for what you stand for. And I'm sure you know that. It shows you have a lot of character and you stand by what you believe, which is commendable in my eyes. I'm sure it'll turn out great!

This is unless this was an impulsive idea of which you've had little thought about and of which you only think is a good idea sometimes... then you are stupid. *kidding around*

Is this your first tattoo? Be prepared for some rather uncomfortable pain if it is.

I have a piece down my right arm. It wasn't too bad at times but it did suck, especially on my elbow... Ouch

Good luck

Why not, comrade?

And just so you know, the whole tattoo ought to (needs to) be outlined in black, it will hold up better over time.

What do you mean with "outlined"? Even if the tattoo is entirely black? Or in the case I get the sickle painted red? Thanks for the advise, by the way.

Edit:

Thanks Kittie. I've thought about this, of course. But just enough to be sure that this is what I wanted. Sometimes when I ponder some decision way too much I get paranoid or worried for nothing. So I did thought about it, but went to the tattoo place like in a brief moment of courage (and, at the end of the day, what is courage, but a moment of insanity, right?). I guess I'm doing it as a statement to myself, and to those around me. Not that I need to "prove" anything to anyone, but it is nice to show everyone that this is something real in my life, that this is what I really think. It will be a reminder too, for me. Seeing it everytime I look in the mirror will push me to read more when I'm feeling lazy, or to get up whenever I'm feeling defeated, or whatever.

It's my first tattoo, yes. I'm kinda proud of myself for not doing it before, drawing something stupid or meaningless in my skin. This is serious for me. I can't deny the "awesome factor" plays it's role though. I love seeing the shock on people faces when I tell then those words, "anarchy" and "communism".

Is your tattoo political/ideological too?

Well as long as you have good reason for doing it I say go for it and don't look back. Besides people with tattoos are badasses :thumbup1:

No, mine's not political/ideological or anything like that. It's a scenic piece, wrapped around all the way down my right arm. It's a large tree with falling leaves and other stuff... but I'm not doing it justice by just talking about it so I wont go into further detail. It has a lot of personal meaning, again, something I wont go into here... It's only Black and White right now, I haven't gotten it filled yet. Don't know if I will, it looks good as a B&W piece... Had a friend do it "off the clock" so it was cheap...

Maybe I'll throw pictures up sometime but you should definitely show us when it's done. :)

What do you mean with "outlined"? Even if the tattoo is entirely black? Or in the case I get the sickle painted red? Thanks for the advise, by the way. There are essentially two parts or steps in a tattoo. The outline and the shading/color. The outline is the shape of the tattoo, as if you drew it with a pencil. That should be all done in black. As tattoos age they tend to spread/settle in the skin, the black outline helps to contain the definition and shape of the tattoo.

So if you do it solid black, obviously the outline will be black. But if you do part red, make sure the outline of the red part is still black. It is possible to do red line work, and a dark, solid red is just about the only color you can do it with, but it will not look as solid in 10 years as a black outline would.

Check it out:

That's a tattoo of mine. It has a red outline as you can see, notice how the ink has settled and spread a bit (its probably two or so years old) and the outline is wider in some spots than others, and really thin in some spots? That won't happen with a black outline. (assuming you have a good artist also, of course)

Because in ten years you may hate it and that's even if you remain politically unchanged.

I personally prefer the red black one:
http://www.redanarchist.org/images/graphics/sicklea2trans.gif
I find it more pleasing to the eye for some reason. Full black just seems.. a tad boring..

I've considered the same logo for a tat as well, but I like the red and black one more and I've got other tattoos in line that need to be done first. If you don't like it in ten or so years then get a cover up of some sort (though its annoying to find a cover up for a black tattoo).
A small one on your chest should be easy enough to cover up in front of reactionaries (unless you liek demz cleavage).
Just don't scratch your crusties off as your tattoo peels!

I understand now. That's all great advice cmoney, thank you. One more thing: what design would you say ages better? The full black, or the one that pax et aequalitas posted (with the red sickle and hammer. Thanks for that pax, by the way).

Because in ten years you may hate it and that's even if you remain politically unchanged.

Although I can see myself learning more and maybe changing my thoughts on politics/economics/society a little bit, I don't think I will have such a major change on my view of things as to regret doing having this on my chest. Not because of being closed minded, I just feel comfortable with my actual position. Anyway, thanks for the advice, comrade .

A quality artist will make either look good for a lifetime.

That looks great, love it. Glad to see it came out well... because I've seen some fucked up tattoos before. And on top of that I've seen some terrible tattoos that should have been very simple to do... Like simple letters, or a smiley face... but anyway...

Looking at that makes me want to get more work done... damn you... :p

Thanks guys, I'm really happy with it as well. It took the guy around 45 minutes to complete it. It was painful when the needle got near the nipple, after that it was OK. It cost me 350 pesos (something like, US$ 90, I estimate).

Thanks to everyone who posted. Specially cmoney with his advice, and pax, obviously, for providing me with the drawing I was looking for. :)

I recall that Maradona showed Fidel Castro his enormous toos' of Fidel and Che. I also remember the look of utter disgust in the real Fidel Castro's face.

I have a tatoo on my upper right arm. It reads "My God, what have I done?!" Also, I have another too' near my asshole. It reads: "It smells here." I plan to have another one placed very near my dick. It'll read: "In a few years this will be permanently limp." I'm in favor of full disclosure.
