Washington is scared that if they deploy ground forces in Afghanistan, body bags will be going home. And political tolerance for casualities in the US is poor.
Thus opposition to the war will mount. Washington's hands are tied because of their fear of the American working class. This is an indication as to how weak US imperialism actually is In effect it is a "paper tiger". Washington are victims of their own hubris.
They had been able to get away with their attack on Iraq and Yugoslavia primarily through an surgical air strikes. Now we could see the possiblities of the US's geopolitical rivals move in for the kill.
They will support the Taliban as a means of sucking the US into a war of attrition that will weaken the US globally. This is one possible outcome.
