I have a problem, Lil Wayne makes me feel racist, but it's not just him. Whenever I listen to rap I inevitably hear a song which makes me loose faith in black people as a whole. I know it's not fair, and I like individual blacks. I give everyone a fair shot, but when you take a look at BET, certain hip-hop and rap, and Kanye West it's hard not to twitch a little bit. I'm pissed that it happens and am ashamed at the media for: 1) portraying blacks like ignorant idiots, 2) supporting a view of black helplessness, and most importantly 3) pushing me to write this post. I feel like this post will help me express my frustration and am looking forward to some constructive feedback.:(

No need to focus on black people, Bill O'Reilly makes white people look like bigoted swine.

I guess the point here is that there's no need to judge an entire race by 3-10 individuals who are put in the spotlight.

Obviously Lil Wayne and such people do not represent the entire black community, but even the Portion it does shouldn't be looked down upon. They are just as capable as anyone else, but simply were not given the opportunity. What you should be angry at the media for is forcing these ideals down the throats of young black men and women.

...and now you're no longer racist. ;)

Stupid threads are stupid.

This is just a thread for the OP to moan about how little he likes Lil Wayne. If you seriously base your opinion of an entire people on one guy you're a dumbass. But that's not the point here, it's to rip on Lil Wayne. If you wanna do that just make a thread in the music section, better yet we already have a thread on Weezy.

No, it's not, it's how the media puts forth bad examples of black culture and how they succeed. It belongs in the discrimination section, and I was not insulting him as a person, I believe in the op I said that he couldn't be as bad as he comes across.

He does not represent the black working class community but the corporate media-whom are probably largely white, conservative, and obviously not working class.

So black people are approximately 11% of the global population. That's about 770 million people. How many black rappers do you dislike? <100 (I assume)

100
-------
770,000,000

There are people of all races on television who reinforce negative stereotypes, but they don't speak for the majority. In fact, the media is controlled by the bourgeoisie who profit from stereotypes and racism. So its likely that they'll want those stereotypes over-represented.

Lil Wayne is OK. I guess the hate is because Southern rappers like him are all about swagger and no social conscious in the lyrics.

I love Southern Rap though. It's witty, it's catchy, it has the best beats.

I am sorry but the Northeast scene tries way too hard to be smart about their rap.

Like the rap video that was posted above, I get it, you have a conscious, so what?

The social conscious rap out there is good but the beats and rhymes tend to be whack as hell.

Get some Three Six Mafia, UGK, and Bun B in your stereo and listen to some good creative lyrics.

THIS. Oh, god, this so much. If you want to find some great black musicians look no farther than Jazz, I'm a big Miles Davis fan. Want to go on the greatest music trip you'll ever expierience? Throw on *****es Brew. I have tried so hard to get into hip hop because my friends are all huge fans and I really can't. I think it's probably the fact that I care nothing for lyrics at all, its all about the music itself for me, I have more of an appreciation for the people making the beats but in reality, the beats in hip hop arn't enough to make me a fan. Also, I don't think Bad Brains are a good example with them being homophobes and all.

My the slur hip-pop, i assume you mean, 'popular hip hop'? What is wrong with Hip Hop that is popular? Do you feel superior when you inform people that you like Hip Hop, 'but not that stuff on the radio, I like that hardcore underground stuff'. It's so cliche to be anti-cliche.

Let us resume the topic of Lil' Wayne though. Lot's of people said the Carter IV was dissapointing. It was not as good as the Carter albums before, but it was still good in my opinion. Here are some examples:

By hip-pop, I mean hip-hop that has no artistic merit and merely serves to sound catchy and make money. Binary Star coined the term back in the 90s. Also, one of the artists I posted is affiliated with the Wu-Tang Clan. Is that really underground? Everyone loves some Wu-Tang!!

I would be so happy if some of the underground artists I listen to were popular as hell as long as they kept making good music. And no, I have an extreme distaste for 90% of the "hip-hop" on the radio because it FUCKING BLOWS. Unlike hipsters, I LIKE when more people start listening to these underground peoples. CunninLynguists popularity has exploded since 2007, and they seriously deserve it. You can even find their CDs at random corporate chain CD-stores now, but they still make good music!!

I appreciate the prejudgment, though. I have some news for you: Lil Wayne is an ignorant fuck who makes shitty music. He is quite possibly one of the WORST 'rappers' I've ever heard in my life, and I *almost* wish for his death so I can stop hearing his shitty music all over the damn place.

Not really a fan of lil wayne at all, don't think he's all that talented, though a couple of his songs are okay as background music.

But yeah, the criticisms of the OP, that he is generalising based on the projection of more famous black hip-hop artists, across the entire black population, are valid. I don't have a problem with much of hip-hop culture, but some idiots like lil wayne who seem to try and validate the whole 'b*tch*s, guns and drugs' thing really do get on my nerves.

The wierd thing about the OP is that he acknowledges that BET use, create and promote certain and then the OP's admits because of thoose images he feels negative feelings to black people. It is like saying "I know Santa Clause is not real, but I can't help not believing in him, I blame the elves". If you watch a Lil'Wayne clip and say "I hate black people" there is something wrong with you, not BET.

I had the opposite problem, and low key still do, I guess. It was hard for me to think of some rappers as "fat cats" because they weren't white, i.e. in line with the stereotype. Yet if you watch this video, it's obvious that Lil Wayne, Birdman, and Rick Ross all qualify.

Way better tunes to swing to then some socially conscious whack rap, especially since you cannot swing to some old 90s outdated beats like most of the East Coast shit being pumped out living off of their glory days. No one down South finds that shit the least bit appealing.

Yes, Souther Rap has character, it's witty and has a mad sense of humor, not unlike a lot of the Brooklyn rappers that take themselves way too seriously.

EightBall and MJG, Three Six, UGK, OUTKAST blow any of those other guys out the water with their witty rhymes and their funky ass beats.

Total smoke out and chill music, not angry as hell pseudo-intellectual crap like Mos Def. I applaud them for being vocal about current events and social issues, but as far as having good beats and solid creative lyrics, the South has them beat by a mile.

Get yer mind correct.

Also, dude, I am not being totally serious. It's just my opinion on hip hop. I respect East Coast rap, it's just not my cup o' tea.

Apologies for gettin' all crazy on you and that other dude in this thread. I've had some sort of a jaw infection related to my wisdom teeth and as a result had to get my wisdom teeth out this morning, so I've been REALLY REALLY on edge from the pain and resulting lack of sufficient sleep for the last week and a half or two weeks.

I'll admit, if I'm at a party or something, and I'm drunk, I like to listen to some catchy southern shit. And three 6 fits in pretty well, especially some of their older shit like tear da club up. Nobody at a party wants to hear some depressing shit out of the speakers.

But in my free time, I'm a nut for intelligent, socially-conscious hip-hop. And I ultimately do respect those artists far more than the ones geared towards a party audience.

But either way I still don't like Lil Wayne. He's an arrogant ass. I think the only song I liked from him was Hustler Musik off Carter 2.
