View Full Version : I Want A Monkey Damnt

So, after long consideration, I've decided I want a pet. While deciding which kind of pet I would like, I instantly thought of my childhood dream of owning a monkey which I have found out is a legitimate possibility. Can anyone here give me info on monkey ownership? Legality? Diet? Has anyone here ever owned a monkey?

on a more serious note: no, gtfo, wildanimals are not pets, take a dog or cat or donkey out of a shelter and leave taking care of undomesticated animals to the professionals.

i'm serious, monkey are social animals with very intricate social behavior, keeping them as pets in an human environment is severe animal cruelty and i for one would firtst kick you of this board and then call both the ALF and the authorities on your ass

Monkeys throw shit....

That's reason enough not to have a monkey.

Also, you gotta put them in diapers...

Edit: If you want a pet get a dog. I have a Mini-Dachshund and he is awesome and would suggest them since they are some of the few dogs that do not have that dog smell.

Monkeys are dangerous as hell too... there are cases of people in india and africa have their babies stolen and eaten by chimps and baboons. Maybe if i was a cartoon character I would want a british accent monkey as my side kick, but i'm suffice on having a lizard one day. Maybe a few geckos, i would feel bad leaving something on its own all day.

Just have a kid. Close enough to a monkey I figure but much more straight forward. Plus people wont think you're crazy for having one and psycho wont call the ALF. It's a win, win situation.

And you can use your kid for labor, in exchange for food and clothing... seem fair? :p

Are you serious?

I am very well aware of the fact that monkeys are highly social and intelligent creatures and would need very extensive care (which I would be prepared for). When I say monkey I would like to point out I am talking of something small like a capuchin or marmoset not like a gibbon or something. I am failing to see how if I owned a small primate it would qualify as animal cruelty (if properly taken care of) or would warrant kicking me of this board. Owning monkeys are legal in some states of the US so assuming my state allows such things, I don't see the problem.

As far as them throwing shit and all this as everyone has pointed out, they are highly intelligent creatures. If they can learn to pick pockets, unlock doors, etc. then I assume they can be house trained or something could be worked out with it. I've heard mixed reports about primate ownership so your comments Psycho aren't that out of the blue.

Yeah, I'm not really a reptile person. My experince in owning pets and wild pets has mainly been cats and large cats.

My sister was once bitten by a "pet" monkey. She was given 5 shots for rabies. Monkeys are awesome, keeping them as pets and dressing them in human clothes and giving them charming names like Albert or Willis is cool too, but should be discouraged. Rehabilitate them, let them do their thing in the wild, and if you want to help monkeys out fight deforestation and the destruction of their natural habitats.

On an unrelated note, I was spent a week at a Chimpanzee orphanage in Zambia. They are so cool. Especially when they started throwing water with teacups at me; they obviously wanted to be left alone to their monkey business.

1. Monkeys need a lot of social interaction, and human interaction alone won't cut it. That means you need to raise multiple monkeys. 2. It's really, really expensive.

In my experience the dog smell is kept at bay if you keep them bathed and brushed regularly... and yes, I'll go away for a while,

My mom has two dogs, my dad has one. I travel a lot, or try to. Even if I leave for a while, when I come back I can't smell dog. But when I go to friends houses, who don't bathe their dogs but once a month or something, it reeks of dog. It's all about keeping up with baths often.

I once met a lady who had a pet monkey and it was perfectly fine, it all depends on the species if the OP is planning on buying a chimpanzee then I would agree with you, but there are several small kinds that (if the owner if willing to put in the massive amount of effort and money it requires to take care of them) would be fine as pets.

no i'm not, i'm no animal rights fanatic but i did some volunteering in shelters, yes also a few days in a monkey sanctuary and we need people to take animals out of shelters not import more likely candidates to end up in one.
so lets say you go for marmosets, are you really going to take care for at least 2 (but if you want them to life a bit decent life 3+) monkeys for up to 16 years?

besides, the vast majority of monkeys in the pet trade are caught in the wild, not bred, so again, no i'm not bluffing.

Yes, I would and I am saying this in all honesty, this would definately not be some bullshit half-assed project in which I didn't do any research or consider all the variables before hand. I did the same consideration before I bought my serval(s) whom has recently died which has taken me awhile to get over. I'm not new to the taking care of exotic or wild animals, just not primates. I would of course do extensive research on whatever species I decided to try to obtain in order to provide the best life possible. I am looking at capuchins or marmosets though I'm not even sure if this would be possible as I can't find the legality of it for the state of Virginia.

I found this:

When was the last time you walked outside your home in the United States and saw a monkey swinging from trees in your yard? Never, unless they escaped from a zoo! Monkeys are not native species to the United States, hence the term EXOTIC PET. Monkey mothers ARE NOT KILLED while their babies are still on their backs and taken from the wild in the US. They are bred in captivity and removed from their mothers as any other animal, dog, cat … is removed.

Since 1975, the Federal Quarantine Regulations (42CFR71.53) have restricted the importation of primates. Primates CAN NOT under any circumstance be imported to the US as pets. Also applies to re-importation of a primate originating in the US.

ALL LEGALLY acquired pet monkeys in the US have been bred in the United States, from primates who had been brought here prior to 1975, NOT taken from the wild.

Yeah I figured anarchists/anti-authoritarians are more into cats since cats are independent, self-determining creatures whilst Marxist-Leninists want dogs since they are obedient.

Why do people from Muslim cultures dislike dogs and pigs? I understand the prohibition against pork, but would this carry over into having a pig as a pet? I am not challenging this, just curious. Is there a prohibition in the Quran or is this a cultural attitude?

when I was very young growing up on Long Island, New York there was a liquor store run by an Italian family my Dad would sometimes take me to on weekend shopping. They had a huge cage with a monkey colony, I don't know what species. I was fascinated by them and, when I could I would spend an hour or so watching them.

My concerns would be I would have to wudu (ritual cleaning) more so than I have to do now as they are seen as being unclean. I would have to discuss this with my Imam but I'm pretty sure having a pig as a pet would be a no-no and personally I don't like pigs and have no desire to own one as a pet independent of my religious/cultural beliefs.

With dogs however I can give you a straight answer. It's a tricky issue, I have heard mixed things from various scholars about owning dogs as pet but generally speaking (from what I have heard mainly and accept) it's not permissible to own a dog as a pet if you're Muslim and if a dog's salvia was to touch a part of my body I would be required to wash said part of the body as it would be najis ("impure"). They are generally seen as being unclean animals. I am also not a dog person and again this is independent of my religious/cultural beliefs. I assume the same thing would probably apply to pigs as pets and other such things too but i'm not 100% on that.

As for whether or not it is commanded in al-Qur'an, I don't think there is any direct prohibition of owning either dogs or pigs as pets. I think this is probably taken from the hadiths and other rulings from various scholars, I can look this up and PM upon more research if you like. Cultural attitudes which have evolved from such hadiths and rulings are probably something to consider, perhaps.

I actually had a neighbor in Mexico as a kid, who was a fisherman down in South America for awhile, and came back with two piranhas that apparently got caught in a net or something.

I don't remember the details, I just remember being scared of the fish after he showed me them tear apart some red meat.

As for primeapes, I saw some baby Gorillas on this one MTV special and they figuratively gave me a heart. Along with baby huskies, if a cat is cool and I teach it not to step on my junk, those can be pretty cool. However, my dream dog might be an english bulldog.
