Does anyone have any recommendations for fiction books which star a member of the queer community? I find that is is hard to find decent,non-smutty,novels in which a gay, lesbian, bisexual,or transgender person is portrayed in a positive manner.

The recommendation doesn't have to be leftist* and can be from any genre other than romance (not a big romance fan).

-Thanks!

*though bonus points to those who find queer leftist fiction

Oscar Wilde, while not a fictional character :D, was a homosexual (and anarchist) author of large badassery.

Also: Harry Potter. Dumbledore is no doubt the most awesome gay character of all time.

I just wanted to say that if you are ever interested in reading a beautifully written love story (and I know you said you are not big on romance, so please forgive this post), Maurice, by E.M. Forster, is a lovely book about two men, who are vastly different, finding each other, across the great chasm of the English class system, that separates them. The novel, as I remember it, is just about perfect, and I would bet that lots of literate people would enjoy it. Reading it made a big impression on me. (Please forgive my digression)

Try Raptor - a historical romance novel with a genderqueer character, set at the era just after the fall of the Western Roman empire:

Dennis Cooper is prolly my favourite fiction writer. He doesn't portray queerdom as something great.

Queer by William Burroughs.
I was going to suggest this.

I have a first edition of it. It's a brilliant book and you can read it in an afternoon easily.

Also, many of Burroughs' works have a gay theme here and there thoughout.

I remember reading in one of his novels, I can't recall which, where he shoved some Hot Chili in his ass! LMAO

It may have been Queer even...
