Im learning russian and i've actually found a speaking partner, its helped a great deal. Usually in the morning before school my Russian friend is the first person i see, so i greet him in russian (the formal way because thats the one i think id be using more often) But after i say my goodbyes; the rest of the day i still greet people in russian (informal) even if they don't know a lick of russian. Its sort of a bad habit considering i live in the states, but is it odd for someone to do that when they are learning a new language?

No. I took 5 years of German courses and I still sprinkle my speech with German even though those around me haven't the faintest idea what I'm saying.

I only use my rudiments of russian to insult people so I voted no.
Its liberating.

I took 4 years of Spanish courses and I still sprinkle my speech with Spanish even though I haven't the faintest idea what I'm saying.

I do this, but mostly with words that are easily understandable cognates like "interesante".... Although I have this bad habit of saying "contra" in place of "against" sometimes and I think it confuses people.

lol I looked at the poll without reading the first post... so i voted "yes" because i thought you were referring to some kind of abstract concept- what is "it"? Is it life? The universe? Goat's cheese?

Then I read the OP. So my real answer is "no". In fact, I do that myself quite often! (In Spanish, though, not in Russian). I always say things like "muy bien", and whenever I yawn I say, "ai ai ai".

Although I've never done this, I don't think it's particularly odd in any way. I think it would be the same if you just replaced whatever your usual English-language greeting was with another English-language greeting. You're just forming the habit of learning something new.

Also, I bet the occasional Russian word in your speech would have made people paranoid before 1989.:D

I sprinkle my English with both French and Spanish all the time. More so with French since I know it better.
