I chanced upon these books while looking for something to give my 16 year old niece for her birthday: Land of the Lost Mammoths and Pirates, Bats and Dragons both by Mike Davis (yes, that Mike Davis) and sub-titled "An Adventure of Science." The books are intelligent, well written and subtly anti-capitalist and anti-national security state (for example, the bad guys in the second book are US special forces.) Highly recommended.
