I would imagine not very popular, these days religions tend to be the more conservative and not progressive force in society. I think this article is fairly interesting as to why that is.

I understand that some of the ideas remain pretty influencial in some areas of Latin America, but seems to have never had any realy influence beyond that region. The Vatican basically stamped it out decades ago.

The current President of Paraguay is a former bishop who was influenced by liberation theology and leads a left wing government.

You're sure you don't mean Ecuador? Isn't Rafael Correa, Ecuador's president, a former priest who now leads a left-wing government?
