THe girl next to me took a punch directly in the face from one of the arrest teams and went out for a while. There was another one trampled by a horse and she broke a foot. One had several bruises to her arms and face. Another one had to be moved by ambulance on a stretcher. A guy had a broken nose. Several people had bleading head wouds. ONe guy (at least) had a concusion which made him throw up. Several people were severely bruised and battered.
At least one cop got injured when somebody :) ellebowed him in the fucking face when he punched him in the stomache and tried to drag him out of the demo :) That very same person also kneed hiim in the groin...but he was wearing a cup...so ouch. :( All the while offcourse yelling: not resisting, non violent :D

Well I hope you are all well, but what exactly is the point ofr the squat?
PhoenixAsh
2nd October 2011, 17:58
Squatting is a protest against the lack of affordable housing and the purposeful speculation on housing prices by leaving buildings empty while there is a shortage of living area's with the intend to create a shortage to create a rise in price. It is also a protest against the increasing focus by housing corporations in building expensive houses instead of also providing houses for people with less money while at the same time tearing down social housing and cheap housing project to build more expensive houses and bussinesses.
In squats alternative living styles based on solidarity and mutual aid are organised based on a non-capitalist basis. So they organise cultural events, affordable parties, music evenings, creative evenings...they organise give away markets where people give away their unused stuff to others how might need it...they organise cheap food initiatives.
Squatters want more affordable housing and means in which alternative lifestyles can live.
On 1 oktober 2010 they made a law which prohibits all squatting. This is however against the constitution and international law according to the Supreme Court. Yet they still maintain the law.
Yesterday we protested against this an tried to get attention for the fact that the government does nothing to create affordable housing for the increasing number of poor people in Holland.

This is more a problem of government than of property owners. If housing prices were allowed to flucuate according to market then there would be no need to warehouse apartments. When the government (and I don't know if the government does this in Holland) fixes prices for rents through stabilization or rent control--it is often more beneficial for the property owners to warehouse.
Also, low income renting is often for the land lords. Often the credit of low income people isn't all that good and there is the bother of collecting rent and of eviction. (Not that higher income places don't have that problem, too.)
Another problem is that there are just some areas (always the more desirable) that poor people just can't afford to live in. And there isn't much one could do about that. In the end poor people are in a bind.

Fixed rent is better than the ever increasing 4% rent every six months we have on the free housing markets....and that is even with the government capping it at a 4% maximum increase per term.
What property owners do is leave buildings (not only warehouses but homes; flats etc too) empty for years. This increases the demand and pushes up the price on their other properties.
No free market has ever created affordable housing...ever. Why? Because if markets are free then corporations do not build enough houses in order to maximise profit. This has been going on for decades now in Holland.
Also, low income renting is often for the land lords. Often the credit of low income people isn't all that good and there is the bother of collecting rent and of eviction. (Not that higher income places don't have that problem, too.)
What do you suggest these people do then? this simply means taht the system fails completely in providing people with jobs, income and affordable housing. Rent is often too high and so called "affordable" housing is not affordable at all. The problems with evictions because people can not pay the rent illustrates beautifully why we do not need more capitalism in the housing market but less.
Another problem is that there are just some areas (always the more desirable) that poor people just can't afford to live in. And there isn't much one could do about that. In the end poor people are in a bind.
There is a huge amount of what you can do about it. One such thing is to take away the building rights to create exclusively high priced housing in zones and take away private property and ownership and exploitation of housing.
Note that squatters do not want to live in popular and high demand zones. They want affordable housing period.

Fixed rent is better than the ever increasing 4% rent every six months we have on the free housing markets....and that is even with the government capping it at a 4% maximum increase per term. That's the problem. The cost of housing isn't the government's business. The housing costs are what the market could bear. It would be better if the government didn't get involved in privare markets (like housing.)
What property owners do is leave buildings (not only warehouses but homes; flats etc too) empty for years. This increases the demand and pushes up the price on their other properties. Yea, but it is THEIR property to do with as they wish. People have no rights over other people's pivate property.
No free market has ever created affordable housing...ever. Why? Because if markets are free then corporations do not build enough houses in order to maximise profit. This has been going on for decades now in Holland. Listen, builders wouldn't be building high income properties is there wasn't a demand for it. Obviously there is a fair amount of well off people in the Neatherlands that can afford those kinds of places.
[/quoe] No you need less fixed rents and MORE Capitalism. You need the government out of the rent business alltogether. When they get involved property owners can't rent properties and still make money--so they warehouse.
[quote]There is a huge amount of what you can do about it. nope, over here its far more profitable to build luxury offices blocks in the middle of nowhere that 100% guaranteed never will be used and speculate with the mortgage money they than can get based on their theoretical value than building rent housing, in an densely populated small country as the netherlands this is simply unacceptable.
what if it was more profitable to export all the food produced in the US to china than to sell it domestically?
surely you would demand that the government would intervene before you would starve.
there never been and there will never be a truly free market, humanity cant afford it.
further, 99% of the social housing in the netherlandsw was build unsubsidized on the backs of the proletariat who allowed the building cooperations to take an substantial part of their paycheck to build low income rent housing.
a few years ago the politicians stole these houses by transforming the cooperations into corporations over night. Because there is no room to build new houses (in desirable places) these houses are highly coveted and the corporations can make huge profits by selling of these workingclass houses, houses the corporations themselves often bought for literary one single guilder a piece.
finally, squatting in the netherlands doesnt challenge private property rights, its only challenges the right to do whatever you damn well please with it.
it ads an social responsibility to the equation, surely you agree with the fact that you are not allowed to dump your car anywhere in the middle of, lets say manhattan and just let it rust there. the government has to intervene and tow the car, its still your property (as long as you reclaim it fast enough), its just not allowed to waste this scarce space.
And admit it, if some asshole would let his car rot in your street while you never have an parkingspace i'm pretty sure you would first demand the state to tow it and if push came to shove you would get your neighbors together and do it yourself.
squatters argue not much different, its still your house but in scarcity the right to an roof over your head trumps the right to let your property stand empty (and everyone, from the dutch supreme court up to the UN human rights charter, agrees with that in fact) when the state refuses to force owners not to let their propperty stand empty (the towing of the car) we are going to do it our self.

I have to admit--it's difficult for me to discuss the Dutch real estate market, I can speak in generalities and about the American and Irish (where I do a little bit) markets, but I honestly don't have a clue why the Dutch real estate business does what it does. I would think that if there was a need--no mater what it was--it would be filled by the market. But as I said, I don't know.

The empty offices are at 15% this year. That is an increase of 4.3% since Oktober last year...and in June this year that percentage was 14.4%. Yet they continue building offices. Real estate owners use the empty offices to inflate their property value and their market worth. The amount needed to correct their books amounts to 7 billion euro's (9.31 billion dollars) and this would only make their books realistic. It won't change the fact that the offices will stay empty nor does it chage the fact that the increase in empty offices is speeding up.
Currently we have a shortage of 500.000 houses for living. Since the housing market has been liberalised that number only increased with a negative build of 15.000 houses a year. This means that capitalism doesnt work at all to solve the problems on the housing markets.
THese were already structural problems which seriously hampered the economy in 2010 and still the government chose to protect private property and ban squatting. As Psycho explained the squatters do not attack private property. Buy they do attck these kinds of policies which created shortage and exorbitant prices.

Ok...so... today in 1574 we defeated the Spanish forces in Leiden after a long protacted siege in which the whole city almost starved to death. That liberation is a huge landmark in Dutch history...and we celebrate this traditionally every year with a two day festival. There is a lot of tradition....but the best one is that everybody gets completely wasted.
So today I got drunk, climbed a windmill (don't ask), tried to break into a castle (don't ask either)...so three misdemeanors and two fellonies...got the number of a very pretty girl... slept or at least tried to sleep on a podium at 5:00 AM when suddenly a band climbed up the stage and I was rudely woken up by a trombone player who started playing for reverie...refused to move...did the morning reveille and the Koraal...mission accomplished. Take that Bush! We don't do much here...but when we do something and we say mission accomplished IT IS FUCKING ACCOMPLISHED.

Again I don't know your market. But in general construction like that is on a very long cycle often several years and it is difficult to ajuust to a quickly changing market.
Usually a large number of empty offices would BRING DOWN property values. All in all though 15% isn't all that bad in this economy.
Currently we have a shortage of 500.000 houses for living. Since the housing market has been liberalised that number only increased with a negative build of 15.000 houses a year. This means that capitalism doesnt work at all to solve the problems on the housing markets. What does "been liberalized" mean? And a momentary mismatch in supply and demand doesn't mean Capitalism doesn't work--it just means there needs to be a correction in the housing market. Again, these things are on a long building cycle, so it will take a little time to correct itself.
THese were already structural problems which seriously hampered the economy in 2010 and still the government chose to protect private property and ban squatting. As Psycho explained the squatters do not attack private property. Buy they do attck these kinds of policies which created shortage and exorbitant prices.Well capitalists and polititians misjudge markets at times. They are only human. The Soviet Union consistantly misjudged its housing market for 40 years. It had the same housing problem you have, except they weren't allowed to protest about it.

Not if those empty offices are off the market and controlled by the big realestate guys.
I find it funny that Capitalists, of all people, don't think big capitalists are smart enough to game the system and control the markets.

Last time the housing market corrected itself in California it threw hte world into a 5 year recession thats juts getting worse.
liberalized usually means privatizing public housing, and lifting rent controls.
Supply and demand in the housing market, pure market forces never works.

But homelessness in the USSR was'nt a real problem at all, it almost dissapeared.

Supply and demand in the housing market, pure market forces never works. They work just fine if the government stays out of the way. But "Liberalizing" the market then putting on controls, then "liberalizing" it again just makes a mess of things.

Because its money and space in realestate that could be used for affordable housing that is not being used for that and instead being used for warehousing offices.
What should be done is that the public sector confiscates that and uses it for affordable housing instead.
IT is a big chunk of GDP.
Yeah, it is, but a big part of it was that it became heavily securitized.
They work just fine if the government stays out of the way. But "Liberalizing" the market then putting on controls, then "liberalizing" it again just makes a mess of things.
In practice its never been better if "the government just stays out of the way," markets have overall been liberalizing since the 1970s, if they worked it would have worked by now, it does'nt.
Actually there was a huge problem. Milti families lived in small apartments. Married children lived with their parent until later life. (Very similar to the Communists on RevLeft. :D )
There are statistics that can be found on this, and homelesseness dropped a lot and living standards raised a lot (I'm not defending the system), but thats a fact.

Because its money and space in realestate that could be used for affordable housing that is not being used for that and instead being used for warehousing offices. They are two completely different businesses. They have almost nothing to do with one another. I personally am warehousing land here and in Ireland--long term. Land costs are low and I am planning ahead for my kids--maybe 20, 30 years in the future. What I do there is nobody's business but my own.
What should be done is that the public sector confiscates that and uses it for affordable housing instead. Because it isn't theirs.
Yeah, it is, but a big part of it was that it became heavily securitized. True, but that has nothing to do with the housing shortage. That is how most builders finance their buildings. Really, why is there a housing shortage in Holland? You have people that (may) want to pay rent. You have builders that should want to make money from those rents. There is a problem here--and to be hones, I don't understand what it is. (Yea, I know, Capitalism.) What is the real problem?
In practice its never been better if "the government just stays out of the way," markets have overall been liberalizing since the 1970s, if they worked it would have worked by now, it does'nt. No it's a mishmash. I'm not in that business because I don't want to deal with the government. Nobody cares what I do--all business to business.
There are statistics that can be found on this, and homelesseness dropped a lot and living standards raised a lot (I'm not defending the system), but thats a fact. then find them. I was there in the 80s and it was a hell hole.

Fuck the markets, houses are going empty while people sleep in the streets. If depriving some rich fuck or some soulless, faceless corporation of property they're just sitting on is what it takes to remedy that absurdity then I am all for it.
If that means some executive suit or rich fuck has to buy a Mercedes instead of an Aston Martin next month, well boo-fucking-hoo I'm all torn up about that (NOT!).
Some of you really don't fucking get it, do you? Relying on the market to address a basic need - somewhere to live - is a stupidity which it only makes sense to support if one is gaining something from it, i.e. profiting from other peoples' misery.

Cuba is kind of cool if you are a REAL entrepreneaur. The USSR really sucked. You would have to wait on line for hours to get the staples of life. In the end in the USSR--there just was nothing to eat. My wife and I once went into a supermarket to buy a couple of things when we where there to eat in our hotel room--and there was no food in the entire supermarket.

Obviously this case has been and still is big news. In fact the verdict was live on television last night with the usual studio commentaries and so on. Opinion is divided but a lot of people are saying it's a brave move in the name of justice by the court of assizes because they have upheld justice to the cost of the previous judicial inquiries and decisions. However the public prosecution is not happy at all and may attempt "ricorso in cassazione" (cassation) which roughly means trying to get the judgement quashed- although given the profile of the case and the fact that one of those involved is already on their way back to the US I am not sure if they will have much success. Of course this also opens up another question, justice for that poor English girl who was murdered. The other conviction, i.e. Guede, was for a homicide committed with others---- the question that people are asking now is, who are those others?

I can sort of relate to you about love, since I still love my ex both friendship wise and more intimately even though it's been over a year since we broke up. I don't know how I'd handle losing her, but I imagine I would be thrust right into your shoes since I tend to be volatile about my emotions. I find substances tempting, especially when in pain but I never really have what it takes to use them excessively... maybe try finding things you guys can do together? Like play football on weekends or something?
I'm also the same when expressing my own problems, solid as a rock. But we care about you here, and this is a major problem and you know you can pour it all out over here without anyone judging. We're always here for you if you need us. I hope things get better for you man, especially since your quietness might hide the more emotionally unstable side of you if you have one.

I can sort of relate to you about love, since I still love my ex both friendship wise and more intimately even though it's been over a year since we broke up. I don't know how I'd handle losing her, but I imagine I would be thrust right into your shoes since I tend to be volatile about my emotions.
Idk, the worst part (and I probably shouldnt say this out loud).. let me give you some background...
She's my best friends sister, and he was never really down w his sister dating.. you know how that is  So I could have never, out of respect for him, told her. I just kind-of let it slide and tried to find that second best.
But I had a dream about a month ago. I told her. And it was beautiful. She didn't even say anyting, just hugged me. I woke up with the greatest feeling, ever. I was in a slump sort-of from not working anymore, and that dream got me re-invested in being creative. I've been writing a lot since then. I decided that day that I was going to tell her the next time I was out there. ... Don't ever not tell someone you love them. You may not get the chance.
It's just tough man. Tell your ex you still love her. Tell her you don't care about being in a relationship, you just want her to know you still love her.
I find substances tempting, especially when in pain but I never really have what it takes to use them excessively... maybe try finding things you guys can do together? Like play football on weekends or something?
That's actually a good idea. We used to play basketball like mad before he left for the marines, I should set up a weekly game we can just hang out and play.
Again, thank you man. I just need people to talk to that aren't in the loop. And people will judge me, I've never really cared about that. It's trival to worry about it. Take their sound judgement, and change if you need to. If it is not sound, move along.
I just want to get the message out. You can't find love in a substance. Love is in your heart. It is something that you do. You can take drugs, that is fine. But if you are taking them to escape the hate, it will never work. YOU are the only one who can do anything.
Just pay attention. When you're about to stick that needle in your arm, think... "has this gone too far?"

Competition for money ( Which is fine, as long as I make 6 or 7 figures) Competition for women (which is fine, as long as I am the one getting laid. Other people can have the relationships and marriage and all that), and competition for power (which is fine, as long as I do relatively well in this regard. Man, no. I'm not ready for that. I'm moving out and have a decent paying job for my age and the times. That's good. I've considered starting up and running a game shop with some friends like a co-op or something. That'd be fine (even though it'd be out of business in a minute, by virtue of being a traditional game shop).
But a career? Nope. I'm not ready for that. I don't feel like I've lived yet.

So my toilet seat broke (or, finally finished breaking, which took about 18 months from start to finish) and I got a new one today. In the catalogue it was called 'deluxe toilet seat.' They weren't lying. It looks like a piece of antique furniture. To borrow a phrase from #FF0000, it's seriously ballin'. And I hope you're all jelly. Etc.

Yeah, to be honest that was my own little addition :) Soz or whatever it is the kids say nowadays...
However, as you're all seriously committed to this story now, I will demonstrate how a toilet seat can, indeed, be 'deluxe':
http://i55.tinypic.com/mcspi8.jpg
The first requirement of any deluxe toilet seat is that it has to be made of wood, because plastic just ain't gonna to cut it. However, it can't just be any old wood, oh no - it needs a pretty grain, for a deluxe finish; here we see ash, with the kind of flaming that would get anybody excited. And, if we look very closely, we'll notice that it is ergonomically shaped for comfort. A throne fit for a king, I think you'll agree.
#FF0000
5th October 2011, 12:10
So, I've noticed that no other toilet seat ever feels quite right aside from the one that one has at home. Anyone else notice that?

So today I leaned wayyyy back in a chair to close my eyes and rest a bit from my daily toil. I had a glass of tea in my hand, as always, and there was a nice bit of tea left in the bottom, maybe 4.5 ounces, and lots of slushy melting ice.
That's when tea gets really good, so I wanted some, see? A little private tea party, as it were. If you will ... Pleasant thoughts of Sarah and Boston, 1773 danced in my sleepy head.
So I brought the glass to my mouth and tried to get a taste. But the ice was freezing the tea by now, looking really good and all, but I couldn't get the tea to move past that freezing slush.
So I shook it a little. A little more. Shaking harder, me still leaning way back and awaiting ecstasy ... the tea was trapped below the ice like a desperate whale under the north pole. A kind of "whale OI." The tea just wouldn't dislodge ... harder did I shake!
Finally the whole contents of the glass whooshed out of the glass and into my face and onto my chest and down into my pants, saturating me with icy tea.
I can't remember changing shirts but I'm dry now. At least I got some tea. I was feeling all "jelly," as #FF would say.
On edit: I see now that "jelly" means jealous, not "warm and fuzzy" like I thought. So I'm not sure what #FF means when he says it.

Man, I have been arguing with people in the past few days. Winning the arguments, sure, but I'm tired of it already. Tired of people 1) who assume I'm "looking for a handout" or need to "get a job" because I hold a certain opinion or something. It's amusing, I think, that I hear this after 12 hours on the factory or warehouse floor, but still -- it gets old.
And tired of 2) People who are aggressive as fuck and don't know what they're talking about. I take the aggression in stride, though. I don't sound like it bothers me or gets me angry. Again, I think it's funny when people tell me Reagan cut spending and we saw prosperity because of it, when Reagan raised taxes himself and increased spending and doubled the debt (for example).
But it gets old real quick. I remember being a kid and looking at adults and being like "OH MAN HOW WILL I EVER BE SO SMART AND GROWN-UP" but here I am teaching people twice my age lessons in history, economics, and civility.
But I shouldn't get bitter. Yelle makes it better.

You'll earn a salary, get fit, get to wear cool goggles, save your fellow man from natural catastrophes, save some dough, stop heroin dealers at the border, learn a marketable skill, all without having to advance the neo-fascistic racial homophobic imperialist etc. agenda of Amerikkka in a foreign land. (I almost said "homoerotic agenda" by mistake, LOL) Seriously, your commie "friends" will mock you, but you're big enough to handle that. You'll be like Michael Coreleone telling a flabbergasted Santino: "I joined the Marines this morning."
And you'll be able to tell rednecks in bars in 10 years things like "uh, dude, I served too, so how can I say this? Oh yeah, shut up."

Construction industry has hit a 30 year low, I don't know whether that means nationally or just in the NE. Most of my relatives used to work construction until they got laid off. And no, plumbers and electricians don't make well for themselves lol, unless they own their own firm and exploit other plumbers and electricians. My firm ( I work for it ) is a private, non unionized firm working on renovations for millionaires/billionaires, and the single most important aspect of success. It isn't natural, all this "you go over here, and you do this, and you do that" business.
"Natural" means we all team up in roving bands of no more than 150 members. Hunt and fish all day. Stay in caves on rainy days and draw bulls and horses on the walls and make beer. Bang on some gourds and blow flutes. Until the noise gets on your nerves and you go apeshit and leave to start your own band. (Get it? Your own band?) They must secretly admire you, but from afar... you mustn't find out... so they call you a dumbass to throw you off... :p Or something...

Welp, I just played a fantastic game of Shogun 2 Total War. Hope you guys are ready for some war stories because I have a huge story to tell of my glory and honor on the field of battle.
This reminds me that I've never played more than 10 minutes of Shogun 2. Bought it back when it came out, then my PC decided to die.
I guess I'll do that now.

It's a p. long tale so I will put it in the Spoilers.
So I played a game of Shogun 2 online against a 7-Star daimyo who decided to be a sport and field all of his finest veteran units against mine.(For those that don't know: 7-stars is kind of a lot and is way above my 3 star rank, and veteran units are a cut way above normal ol' units, like what I mostly had)
I dimly remember a quote, made by some officer in World War 1, I believe, before the Meuse-Argonne. "In war, the only sin is to not act", or something along those lines. That simple principal was the lesson I taught my opponent through the violent, blood-soaked parable that was this battle.
The battlefield was a forest gully. A shallow gully down the middle of the field, flanked by light hills and light forest. I set my main force (of samurai and warrior monks armed with bow, nanigata, and katana, and ashigaru armed with bows and simple matchlocks) up on the western hill over the gully. It was higher, slightly more forested, making for a slower advance but denying enemy scouts an accurate assessment of my forces.
My cavalry consisted my my general and his horse-archer body guard, a unit of mounted warrior monks armed with nanigata, and light spear cavalry. The monks and my general followed behind the main force. My light cavalry, however, was set on the eastern hill, and was sent ahead to secure a sword dojo ahead of our position, to supply my army with superior weapons. After this task was complete, they continued forward into the woods, moving slowly to sneak up on the enemy's east flank.
The enemy advanced dead-center through the gully, giving me a massive advantage, as I was now on both of his flanks, on higher ground. My units advanced to the middle of the field far faster than I had anticipated, and as a result, my opponent stopped his advance not two hundred yards from where he entered the gully. Stopping, I assume, to avoid being flanked from the rear, and stopping to keep from marching within range of my archers.
The enemy force was am intimidating one. All well trained warrior monks and samurai, armed mostly with nanigata, though there were two units of katana, and one unit carrying the especially fearsome no-dachi -- a two-handed sword so masssive that it was carried over the shoulder like lumber.
Their bowmen, however, were poorly trained but numerous. Ashigaru bowmen packed in such tight rank that I imagine at least a dozen fell to friendly arrows as they were loosed.
A tense period of what must have been minutes passed like hours. I sent my warrior-monk cavalry farther ahead and to the west, flanking them completely now from both sides -- my force, uphill on their right flank and to the front, a unit of fanatical warrior monks, up hill, on their right flank to the rear, and a unit of light cavalry that they had not spotted, up hill, on their left flank.
Tired of waiting and secure in my own flanks, I sent my archers and gunners, including my general's horse archers, forward, down the hill they were on and on top of another, smaller hill just ahead of them, putting the enemy force in range while still maintaining some slight height advantage.
The enemy had not moved since I took up my position, but I was patient. Despite being led but such a cowardly officer, the opponents forces were well trained and armed, and, as I noticed, had a slight advantage in numbers. The skirmish began, with my archers and gunner peppering theirs. Before long, I ordered them into loose formation, and to instead turn their sights on the enemy's infantry, ignoring the hail of arrows. Luckily, their archers were in fact as poor as I expected. By the end of the battle, I counted only 200 of 1215 soldiers dead or injured from arrows. Meanwhile, my archers counted at least one hundred dead by their hands.
As the skirmish continued, my cavalry charged simultaneously into the enemy flanks. They smashed into the enemy ranks, crushing tens and sending the unit into disarray before immediately retreating, and charging again.
By now, my archers had run out of arrows, and the enemy had suffered serious losses. Their nanigata forces were reduced by at least half, while their no-dachi samurai suffered slightly fewer losses. Regardless, they were, at least, wavering in morale as their general had left the entire force to stand in the arrows without taking action. I began to move my infantry ahead. As they crested the second hill, some of the ashigaru bowmen immediately broke ranks and fled. From their position, now standing where my archers had been, I ordered my infantry to charge.
Now, my opponent had options. He could have moved his bowmen out of the way as he saw my infantry begin to advance before they were in position to charge. This would let him move his infantry forward, and have them counter-charge, removing my advantage. Or, he could have left his bowmen at the front of his ranks, to have them take the brunt of the charge. Instead, he had his infantry charge through the bowmen in front of them to meet mine. As a result, his bloodied yet still entirely dangerous infantry became tangled in the ranks of the bowmen, making them even more vulnerable to the charge.
The clash was merciless. I counted only a handful of casualties, but I didn't let the fight linger. As soon as my infantry hit their ranks, my cavalry had charged from the rear, crushing the enemy between an equine sea of death and a wall of merciless steel.
I wiped out several of his units completely. Of 1215 men, I had lost a total of 435. Of his force of 1350, he lost 1299.

Politics is about forcibly arranging relations among people
It isn't natural, all this "you go over here, and you do this, and you do that" business.
(Get it? Your own band?) Nobody says you can't leave and nobody says you shouldn't leave.
Don't tell me that don't sound good.
It does sound good... if one doesn't know any better.
People who bang on about the glories of a "simple life" seem to always forget to mention the massive ignorance that goes with it.
There's no way in hell I could live like that, knowing what I know now. I would drive myself bonkers thinking of all the things I can't do because they require electricity or a class of materials more advanced than bamboo or flint. I would be bored to tears without books of any kind.
People also seem to easily forget just how much easier various technologies make their lives. Electric lighting has brightened our world, banishing the darkness which can hide predators. Toilet paper and clean running water enable us to maintain impeccable levels of personal hygiene and grooming. I dunno about the rest of you, but the very thought of washing myself in cold water with no soap or hair conditioner makes me cringe.
But by far and away perhaps the worst feature of most visions of a "simple life" is that they present a social environment completely inimical to the development of scientific enquiry, which is perhaps the single greatest contributor to genuine human happiness in history.
No, for me a far more compelling vision is that of a vast citadel of diamond among the stars, shining brilliantly with with the wealth and knowledge of its many and varied inhabitants. A beacon of enlightenment and power, a titanic multifaceted gem of culture and life. Humans and their mind-children fertilising the apprently barren soil of the universe with blissfully aware intelligence.
Light, life and mind are precious things. Should we not be endeavouring to ensure that such things become more than just a sub-clause of a footnote of a parenthetical statement, within the greater history of the universe?

Actually, if you don't wash your hair for a long enough period it sort of cleans itself so they might not have needed shampoos anyway. We don't know, but they may have used animal fats from their hunting and ashes to make a primitive form of "soap"- pure speculation. They definitely had "ochre" and this too has been used as a body decoration and insect repellent as documented by tribal societies up until our times- whether they used it as such we don't know but it has, I believe, been found in burial remains.

By the way, old school traditional olive oil soap is tonnes better than that crap they sell in the shops nowadays, with its assorted chemicals and other such nasties. I get mine imported from Syria.
*Bourgeois decadence *
EDIT: just to clarify, I don't personally import it or anything. One of Bud's buds (see what I did there?) does that bit, and I just buy it from them. Just so we know...

How does hair clean itself? I find if I don't wash my hair it becomes lank and greasy, my scalp becomes itchy and the skin adjacent to my hair acquires a greater amount of zits. It doesn't feel clean at all.

The Celts certainly had soap, but they were a lot more advanced than most people give them credit for (I blame Roman propaganda).

I read about this somewhere. If you go without a shower long enough your hair sort of just "regulates" how oily it is. Can't find anything specific about it but I KNOW I read something on it.
And I think zits in general weren't much of a problem due to diet. Something about carbohydrates and insulin spikes or something.
I really don't know much about what I am talking about.

The Celts certainly had soap, but they were a lot more advanced than most people give them credit for (I blame Roman propaganda).
The Babylonians had something like soap around 2800BCE and the Egyptians had something similar recorded in at least the 6th century BCE. The Romans and Greeks and presumably other Mediterranean peoples also used olive oil to clean themselves.
I don't think the Romans ever described them as dirty, fearsome yes, but dirty no. This idea in general of people being filthy in the past is largely the result of silly portrayals in films and such like. I don't think there's much actual evidence of this.
