Granted, her spokesperson dismissed the suggestion as a joke, but still - you can't tell me this hasn't crossed a lot of people's minds within the financial-political elite.

North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue talks about suspending elections. Is she serious?

Would members of Congress be more productive and more bipartisan if they weren't concerned about re-election every two years?

It's a thought that's crossed the minds of many voters as well as House members, many of whom have complained over the years about non-stop campaigning.

But Bev Perdue, the Democratic governor of North Carolina, said it out loud Tuesday.

"I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won't hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover," Perdue said. She later added, "You want people who don't worry about the next election."
Was she kidding? "It's unclear whether Perdue, a Democrat, is serious (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=AnzrNayY_NlYk0bYDRot7wmbCMZ_;_ylu=X3oDMTFka3B kYnE0BG1pdANCbG9nIEJvZHkEcG9zAzEEc2VjA01lZGlhQmxvZ 0JvZHlBc3NlbWJseQ--;_ylg=X3oDMTM2ZXAwMWEyBGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRw c3RhaWQDNGQyMDc0MDMtNTUzYi0zZTYwLTgzOWUtZDlkMWE0OD hkNzJmBHBzdGNhdANvcmlnaW5hbHN8dGhldGlja2V0BHB0A3N0 b3J5cGFnZQ--;_ylv=0/SIG=14kpercv9/EXP=1318452526/**http%3A//projects.newsobserver.com/under_the_dome/perdue_suggests_suspending_congressional_elections _for_two_years_was_she_serious) -- but her tone was level and she asked others to support her on the idea," the first report on Perdue's remarks, in Raleigh's News & Observer, concluded.

You can listen to Perdue's complete comments (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=ArpCanP3odsLAfTf_1ZoRnybCMZ_;_ylu=X3oDMTFkZWg zYnZwBG1pdANCbG9nIEJvZHkEcG9zAzIEc2VjA01lZGlhQmxvZ 0JvZHlBc3NlbWJseQ--;_ylg=X3oDMTM2ZXAwMWEyBGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRw c3RhaWQDNGQyMDc0MDMtNTUzYi0zZTYwLTgzOWUtZDlkMWE0OD hkNzJmBHBzdGNhdANvcmlnaW5hbHN8dGhldGlja2V0BHB0A3N0 b3J5cGFnZQ--;_ylv=0/SIG=12sqgbaio/EXP=1318452526/**http%3A//media2.newsobserver.com/smedia/2011/09/28/10/28/11veHD.So.156.mp3) at The News & Observer.
"Not only does this bizarre commentary suggest ignoring the Constitution, but does Governor Perdue forget her own inability to work with the Legislature, regardless if controlled by Democrats or Republicans?" Pat McCrory, Perdue's presumed Republican opponent in 2012, wrote on his Facebook page (https://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=AoVLqU1eEQAm_FO_Ld.hAsabCMZ_;_ylu=X3oDMTFkNWJ 1MDBuBG1pdANCbG9nIEJvZHkEcG9zAzMEc2VjA01lZGlhQmxvZ 0JvZHlBc3NlbWJseQ--;_ylg=X3oDMTM2ZXAwMWEyBGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRw c3RhaWQDNGQyMDc0MDMtNTUzYi0zZTYwLTgzOWUtZDlkMWE0OD hkNzJmBHBzdGNhdANvcmlnaW5hbHN8dGhldGlja2V0BHB0A3N0 b3J5cGFnZQ--;_ylv=0/SIG=12jn9md8b/EXP=1318452526/**https%3A//www.facebook.com/PatMcCroryNC%3Fref=ts%23!/PatMcCroryNC).

Perdue's office said the governor wasn't making a serious proposal.
"Come on," her spokeswoman Chris Mackey said in a widely-reported statement (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=AsY34IsmtUOOpeOWO28MCg.bCMZ_;_ylu=X3oDMTFkMmF zbGIwBG1pdANCbG9nIEJvZHkEcG9zAzQEc2VjA01lZGlhQmxvZ 0JvZHlBc3NlbWJseQ--;_ylg=X3oDMTM2ZXAwMWEyBGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRw c3RhaWQDNGQyMDc0MDMtNTUzYi0zZTYwLTgzOWUtZDlkMWE0OD hkNzJmBHBzdGNhdANvcmlnaW5hbHN8dGhldGlja2V0BHB0A3N0 b3J5cGFnZQ--;_ylv=0/SIG=1540sj5m4/EXP=1318452526/**http%3A//projects.newsobserver.com/under_the_dome/perdue_suggests_suspending_congressional_elections _for_two_years_was_she_serious%23ixzz1ZBIHFqdO). "Gov. Perdue was obviously using hyperbole to highlight what we can all agree is a serious problem: Washington politicians who focus on their own election instead of what's best for the people they serve."

Just suspend their funding and then they can have a short 2 week campaign where, y'know, they actually have to meet and greet local people and persuade them of their personal charms.

The US is ready made for political revolution because the parties are such broad churches that a move to a candidate-orientated, no-party system wouldn't be as painful as across the pond here in Europe, where many left-wing Labour types will be remarkably difficult to split from the Labour Party, even if they agree with our politics.
