Long and complicated story, and the news media as usual are covering it in a way that doesn't tell the whole story.

A group of around 250 students (including me), comprising of not only the usual activist intelligentsia but also regular students, marched across campus and rushed and occupied the Owen G Glenn Building for 5 hours, which is a sort of a symbol of the neoliberalisation of the university since it signifies:
A) the growing allocation of resources into the business school due to university becoming more explicitly a profit-making enterprise
B) the decreasing amount of state-funds in Uni education since the money to build it was contributed by one of the dodgiest business magnates in the country, Owen G. Glenn
C) the architecture sucks

We were protesting against the Voluntary Student Membership bill, as the media reports. But we were protesting against it in terms of a wider "whole" of what was happening to tertiary education in this country - raising fees for students and proletarianisation of academic work conditions, while the Vic Chancellor's salary when up ten or twenty grand.
