Does anyone know of any main theories/theorists that for example Venezuela or Bolivia is built on? Has Chavez or Morales written any? I've heard of an Alvaro Garcia Linera (he's Bolivian, i think, at least he's linked to Morales somehow). Has he written something of interest?

Any other comments on Venzuela or Bolivia would be helpful too.

Beyond Neoliberalism in Latin America?: Societies and Politics at the Crossroads (Studies of the Americas)

by: John Burdick, Philip Oxhorn, Kenneth M. Roberts
is an decent (though lopsided) study of modern-day Latin American politics, which I am relatively certain you can track down a copy of on Gigapedia. It's lopsided in that the group focuses nearly wholly on the individual cases of Bolivia & Chile, and deals somewhat (Roberts' essay) with the municipal governance of several Latin American and South AMerican cities (principally Lima, Montevideo, Mexico City and Porto Alegre.

For a more historical contextual approach, a general briefer is recommended. The Cambridge History Series, while rather Euro-Americo-centric, gives a decent overview of the colonial & neo-colonial history of Latin & South America. I'd recommend it as a start.

I think the book Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano (http://www.amazon.com/Eduardo-Galeano/e/B000AP701M/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1) might give you some good information.I haven't read it personally but I hear good things.

I didn't read these yet:

You should be aware that they may contradict themselves in some points and there are controversies, so don't take a stance right after reading one book.

Yes, modern history and theory was what i was thinking of. But if you have something older you can recommend, go ahead!

Does Salvador Allende count? Or Che Guevara!?

Allende and Guevara were both Latin American, socialist and writers :D, but neither of them fits the Venezuela/Bolivia criteria, unless Guevara's notes from his failed attempt to cause a Bolivian revolution counts.

If Allende and Guevara have written any important, just write it here. I didn't know that Guevara wrote that much theory (other than his diary notes which, as far as I know, could be used as a "guide" for guerrilla war). I started the thread as I'm curious on modern or contemporary socialism in Latin America, but sure, just mention other important persons and works.
