I just received a letter from my internet service provider (cablevision) telling me that they received notification from NBC Universal that I've been illegally sharing copyrighted material (Hannibal). The letter states that they will not disclose my information unless under a court order. What should I do and what should I expect?

Those are automated. Don't worry about it, I used to get them a lot. I stopped getting them after I started using peerblock.

Tell them to go fuck themselves. It worked for me when I got mine! :D

They caught you because you were uploading. Downloading isn't illegal; sharing and distributing copyrighted material is. Until you move locations or get cocky, I'd suggest limiting your upload rate (assuming you're using utorrent or some other BT software) to <100Kb/s. PM me if you need help figuring out how to do that.

How do direct downloads and torrents match up in terms of safety from legal action?

It's honestly hard to say. You're from NYC like me, so the US laws are different than more friendly laws in other countries. The bottom line is, downloading digital property without purchasing it legally is a crime, although the courts hardly go after single sharers like you. Unless you're hosting a massive server with tons of files on upload, you should be safe. Completely erase the file in question off your hdd and things should be fine. Lay low for a while, and anything you upload limit to certain ratios. I've gotten notices before but no legal action ever came after them.

They don't actually do anything. They only really target huge sharers and the actual torrent sites. They realized attacking individuals doesn't help them at all. Keep downloading and enjoy the free stuff.

This might help, but most of it seems to have been said already...

I got a few of those from my ISP a while ago. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act prevents your ISP from disclosing your information to NBC or any company that has "caught" you downloading. Sometimes companies try to pressure ISP's to turn off a "violators" service. But since the ISP would loose a customer, this rarely happens. Try to hide yourself better and be sure to not or severely limit your upload speed. You should be alright.

If you use Deluge as a torrent client you can enable a blocklist in the options.
