How are they useless? How are we defining "usefulness" here?

Well, it's a question of trade-offs, isn't it? A tank the size of a city block may not be the fastest or most maneuverable unit on the battlefield, but their sheer size enables one to give them a nuclear reactor or several for plenty of raw power, armour thicker than most tanks are tall, as well as literal kilotons of armament. They're the Mighty Glaciers (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MightyGlacier) of the armoured vehicle world.
Also, unlike normal-sized tanks, such units are large enough to justify having their own integrated air defences, although as with all armoured vehicles, it's generally a bad idea to send them out completely unsupported.
If you can spare the resources and leap the technical hurdles, then I reckon land battleships can be potent psychological weapons - the first glimpse of one of these iron mountains of death rumbling across the battlefield, smashing aside everything in its path, is bound to cause consternation among even seasoned soldiers. Then they'll bloody shit themselves when they see the armoured behemoth shrug off a couple of tactical nuclear weapons (or the equivalent in conventional fire), before carrying on.

Im going to liken it to this. Think of the Bismarck-class battleships. They were fucking massive but really, they didnt achieve much in combat. The first one went on a rampage through the north sea and the north atlantic and then got sunk a ways out of Brest and the second got bombed to shit in 1944.
Looking at the combat records of the Bismarck it only made one kill on the British "Hood" battleship. It did manage to force "Prince of Wales" battleship to withdraw before it ended up getting annihilated a few days later.
the second Bismarck class ship "Tripitz" got whacked pretty fast. ended up capsizing.
Looks like they probably weren't supported well though. only a few submarines and destroyers and supply ships.

I'm thinking more along the lines of what happened to the Japanese battleship Yamato - the heaviest armed ship ever constructed. On paper it could have destroyed any ship that it encountered, but ended up being sunk by torpedo-bombers from an American aircraft carrier.
