View Full Version : Making my girlfriend depressed

When I first met my girlfriend she called herself a centrist and overtime with us talking about politics and now she calls herself an "leftist". The bad thing about it, is that she has depression and has a very negative view of humanity. So she see that system is nothing more then dictatorship of the capitalist class, but see that human social history as nothing more then an dictatorship of one form or another. I have shown her times when the working class has risen up but that has no effect on her outlook. So now she knows the system for what it is and all the horrible things that happens within it, and she see nothing that can be done about and it makes her very depressed and cry sometime.

I'm sure we've all had that sort of point in our political development, i know i have.
Is she active in any organization? This may help, if your in one try get her to join you; solidarity is a good way to deal with it.

Joining a leftist organisation usually makes you more depressed about the state of Communism actually.
But yea, Capitalism is pretty fucked up, hard fact of life for now.

I think we all go though that sometimes. I listen to good music, hang out with friends, read some Marx, then troll Scott Walker's facebook. Works like a charm.

I went through that after I left the CPUSA years ago. I think it is easy to fall into that thinking because of how fucked up Capitalism is and how alienating the entire system makes us.

There isn't a whole lot that can be done about it. I just focus my thoughts on my personal life and do political activity as a side thing. I couldn't be totally focused on politics or I don't know how I would make it through the day. This is pretty common amongst the left I think, at least for those that are really passionate about classwar. Alexander Berkman killed himself over the failure of the Russian Revolution, as an example.

Explain to her how there are millions of people that feel the same way. Explain that the total discomfort and despair that she feels is going to be transformed into love and action sometime very soon. Tell her she won't see it unless she looks forward to it. In the meantime, focus on engineering yourselves into superhuman revolutionary agents!

I'm not sure how that will treat depression...usually only ever gives me a headache.I often find that talking with a knowledgeable comrade and having a lively discussion can help.

Fine, whatever. Tell her that we can make a better, more efficient dictatorship :D

The fact that the people in charge of the nuclear missiles and food surplus don't have your best interests at heart can be emotionally distressing. Depression is a symptom of starring down the barrel of barbarism.
Just try to explain there is always a feeling of utter helplessness before one decides to take things into their own hands.

has a very negative view of humanity.Misanthropy (having a very negative view of humanity) is utterly reactionary and down-right stupid. Humans are good people, they are naturally peaceful, social, and productive (see for example the primitive communists or the Paris commune). It is the system that produces criminals, soldiers, other negative elements, etc. Be an *anti-capitalist* not a misanthrope.

Sounds like she needs to get into touch with those "great feelings of love". When the world gets me down, I like to reflect on the ways people defy capital. You can help her, but ultimately dealing with it is something she'll have to learn herself.

There's a difference between misanthropy and having a negative view of humanity. Misanthropy would be better defined as a hatred or dislike of humans, whereas a negative view of humanity is just looking out the window and seeing what humanity is up to right now and not liking it.

So what you are referring to is a negative view of *contemporary* humanity. I have that to some extent too and it was once relatively depressing for me too...
However, it definitely helps to be cognisant of the enjoyment we acquire through communicating/interacting with one another as social animals. Although capitalism has twisted humanity I still acquire considerable happiness from interacting with others.

Proof please? I was under the impression that you are not naturally born "good" or "bad", to put it simplistically, but that you're shaped by your experiences and the genetic makeup of your body.

I think it was a combination of the two. My assumption is based off of my reading of some Emma Goldman. She also thought he would have not killed himself if he had seen the start of the Spanish Revolution. It may have been wholly the state he was in from his prostate cancer.

We all know this world is crap. All explanations for why this is so - they all tend to fall into one of two camps: blame the people, or blame the system (and those who run it).
So, we can be positive about the system, but this requires us to either (a) conclude that the world is good, or (b) decide to be negative about the people living under the system in place - people like you and me, and presumably people such as and including the OP's girlfriend. (Ironically, we call this "positive thinking").
On the other hand, if we decide to be negative/critical towards the system, we can then be positive about the people living under that system. Admittedly, negativity towards the system doesn't require positivity towards the people; rather, negativity towards the system merely makes positivity towards people possible.
However, one must ask: does the OP's girlfriend think she's a horrible person corrupting this world? Does the OP's girlfriend think the OP is horrible?
If not, then we can eventually conclude that the problems in this world are due to the system and those who run it - not the "fallen nature" of humanity, or any "inherent flaws in human nature." It's not your fault. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtkST5-ZFHw&feature=related) (Couldn't help myself on the link - sorry!) You're not the problem, and you can be part of the solution if you so choose.
God damn, that's probably the first optimistic thing I've said this calendar year.

the world is rotten but the inhabitants sometimes do pretty things, and i hate more the world than i hate the people within it. history is a nightmare i am trying to awake from, and i want to smash the world because the world was not made in my command, but it commands me

The abusive economic conditions faced in the world today as a result of Imperialism and Capitalist corruption is a conception made by humans, why would you hate the world? I don't focus my hate of humans, just towards Capitalism
