Would you say that it will be a safe and mature decision to declare that you are a communist (communist, anarcho-communist, marxist-leninist, anarchist, etc.) on Facebook? (I mean choosing one of the above as your official political views)

Is it a safe and mature decision to list one's leftist leanings on Facebook? It seems like that would depend upon the composition of one's friends. I openly declare my communism on Facebook. I haven't caught any flack for it thus far. Of course, I'm not friends with many people who are stark-raving anti-communists.

I suppose it depends on whether others already know about it. I did as much and got some pretty negative reactions from people surprised to hear about it from me.
o well this is ok I guess

It's not really a mature decision to put anything on your facebook page.

Well, it depends. In Sweden, pretty much nobody cares (except for bosses, of course). But it's propably different in Canada. If you're just a kid (i honestly have no idea how old you are, so don't believe i am trying to insult you...), or have a vague idea about it being a really bad idea, a compromise may be to just write left-wing. It's no idea trying to be provocative, if it just will lead you into trouble. If you however live in some kind of progressive enviroment, then it's propably no problem. It's not like the police will kick in your door, at least :)

I just put 'nihilist' but nothing else; considering the invasive nature of Facebook already, I think it would be unwise to post anything about your political activities on there at all, period. It's now watched and utilized by the bourgeoisie, law enforcement and who knows who else. It also has facial recognition software and none of the shit that's posted ever officially disappears even if you untag, delete, etc. yourself. Fuck Facebook.

In general, I don't think it's a good idea. It's a social networking site, not somewhere to advertise your political/religious affiliation. If absolutely must put your political views on facebook, you should adjust your settings so that only the people you feel comfortable sharing that with can see it. You certainly don't want all your facebook "friends" seeing that information.

I only have close friends as friends on facebook who already know that I'm a communist.

It's quite irrelevant since it's foolish to use your real name and such on the Internet in the first place unless you absolutely have to (maybe some banking rubbish or such).

I don't put anything illegal on there, but I do share articles from various sites like PSL, Socialist Worker etc. etc. Facebook does suck, but I honestly think it isn't as bad as everyone says it is. Can the pigs get your info easily? Sure, but they can do that anytime they want, facebook just saves them a few hours of work. Whether they get it from the phone and internet companies direct or pry at my facebook, either way they've got it and at that point it doesn't matter how they got it.

He raises a great point as I'm sure they could easily hack RevLeft (or w/e the fuck you do with computers) and get our info:lol:

Ultimately irrelevant since the bourgeoisie doesn't need any sort of proof for them to get their way. When I posted my belifs no one said anything and continues to say nothing despite my virulently anti-American statements.

I get shit sometimes. There's one hardcore cap on my 'friends' list and we lock horns on there every so often. It's fun, but futile to argue with him. He just reverts to profit motive fallacies and trying to impose capitalist economics to a socialist MoP. That and since he 'understands economics' my points are moot. 'Every respectable economist today and for the last 200 years agrees with me so I'm right.', Hi there Chris, this is Karl, Karl, Chris. Have you to met before?

I think there is information on facebook you could give that would be much more dangerous. Those pictures of your fun weekend could cost you your job!

Considering that many bosses nowadays look you up if they're trying to hire you I would say no. I'm not going to until I at least get a job if I even remember to care. Right now I think my "political beliefs" are something like pyrotechnics.

I have encountered those kind of people before.I have one libertarian friend who loved to use the profit motive as a fallback crutch.I believe I won the argument but the end was nothing more than him saying that he will read the Communist Manifesto sometime before the end of the year.Still,it was "fun."
I rarely argue though. Most of my friends do not have much political incentive to actually argue so nothing much happens.

If you hide your information and have the privacy settings up, then employers can't see your dirty weekend party pictures or communist conspiracies. You just have to ignore their friend requests. ;)

Besides people thinking you're weird and nerd what will it accomplish? Maybe someone will ask and they will get interested in politics. Or maybe you are just like anyone else and love having a page completely under your control that everyone visits and can see. Everyone is going to know you are intellectual bro!
(I just posted a leftist status less then half an hour ago so who am I to talk)

While I agree that Facebook is repugnant because it uses facial recognition software, invades privacy, and is otherwise used to monitor us by law enforcement, why not use it to promote communism? Just never post anything you would not want the pigs to know about you.

You wouldn't want the pigs to know you're a communist, unless you want to set yourself up to a lifetime of monitoring.
Seriously, don't put anything on Facebook. Don't even use it if you can avoid it. It's just a big ass data collector.

I am NOT liking the instant monitoring of people's activity on the right side. There's a few people that I want to keep in touch with that I can't really get in touch with anywhere else, but I REALLY want to get rid of it now.

Yeah the phone number showed up randomly but I hid it. This is what my facebook says under political views.
Anti Capitalism (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Anti-Capitalism/160209274023631)
I consider myself to be a Syndicalist. I recognize the validity and necessity of a vanguard but reject post-revolutionary democratic centralism on the basis of the evident state capitalism of former Leninist republics.
It's hidden from people I want it to be. Real complicated to change your privacy settings :p

I try not to be very overt about it, so my official political views on FB are "very liberal" which is close enough to the socialism I hold in high esteem. I often post anti-capitalist statuses, and have Rosa Luxemburg quotes on my profile (I'm also a fan of her page) - I think those are pretty safe. However, I'd never dare to mention Marx or anyone\anything more overtly socialist

I have mine set as communist. I haven't gotten to much flack for it yet, but I do live in Kentucky, and I expect it to happen. I have a hammer and sickle tattoo and I get hassled about it constantly.
