0 AD (http://wildfiregames.com/0ad/) is an open source game that has its resemblance in the Age of Empire branch of games. It is currently being developed and just released its alpha 7 release. Alpha, because featurewise it is incomplete yet. Alpha 7 saw the Carthage civilisation added, among other things.

Give it a try, it works on Linux, OSX and Windows and is completely free. If you add feedback to the developers, it helps the game's development too!

It should be added that while the game is fictional, it is built on historically accurate civilisations. The question is based on the premise "who would win if all civilisations would clash with eachother in their prime?". There is also a big historical database featured in the game. It would be interesting to play some "what if" scenario's, although I'm not sure how macro-level empire management will be done (if at all).
