There's no doubt about it. Crank it up! Pogo in the mirror in your bedroom (but only if your Mum's gone out!)

My vote is "Riot" by the Dead Kennedys.

Honestly I don't know why that song isn't as well known as some of their other "hits", like California Uber Alles, Holiday In Cambodia etc. The structure of the song is just incredible, IMO. The Dead Kennedys were definitely the most talented of the west coast hardcore crowd, with the possible exception of Greg Ginn's guitar work in Black Flag.

For some reason I'm not seeing some of the YouTubes embedded (probably because I'm being a fuddy-duddy and clinging to Firefox 3.6), so I don't know what songs people have recommended. It's nice that my little tweak got a different conversation going.

But, even though it's half tongue in cheek, I can make a good argument for Part Time Punks as a great punk song. Start off with completely snide snotty punk attitude at its cattiest and most inbred, and funny as hell. Then two chords, count em, two, the first two most of us learn when we pick up a guitar. How punk is that? I could go on and on, I was just excited when I came across it surfing around at YouTube.

I'm absolutely just kidding about "greatest ever", my candidate for that would be Oh Bondage by X-Ray Spex:

Too many faves from that era, so going with The Adverts today. Crossing the Red Sea is probably the most underated album of that time.

Very rarely, punk aint the latest new thing so advertisers don't want assossiated with it, sales are not amazing so record companies don't give a toss. Punk is it's own worst enemy in terms of getting airplay, few radio stations will play music with naughty words except in obscure late night slots, no one is gonna publicise music that is overtly political especially those espoused by a lot ofpunk bands.(anarchism, animal rights, antipolice anti state etc) But saying all that The Exploited even managed to get on Top of The Pops once XD

Come off it! Though I did like the line about making sure your mum was out before...

I like too many songs just in general to get into the business of this or that is the best but as far as punk (maybe this is 'post-punk' but in the spirit of 'punk' so fucking what?) goes I think this is really very good...(of course I could give several more examples and maybe I will if others enjoy this one - just ask)
