Deutsche Telekom has received over 5,300 messages in the last 12 days.
And they are not at all happy about this. Good.

Twelve days ago I wrote to ask you to support workers at T-Mobile USA who were struggling with an anti-union employer.

Over 5,300 of you have done so.

And your voices have been heard - the owners of T-Mobile USA have written back to many of you giving their side of the story.

Clearly, they are not happy with our campaign.

We have asked UNI Global Union for a response and have published it online here .

If you've not yet done so, please take a moment to show your support for workers at T-Mobile USA - click here

Online campaigns work - which is why it is so important that you take a few moments to support these new appeals:

Striking student exchange workers at US chocolate manufacturer Hershey need our support today - click here for the IUF campaign to learn more and send off your message

In Australia, union members at Corinthian Doors and Stegbar have faced a lock-out after taking legal industrial action. Their global union federation, the BWI, has launched an online campaign

Finally, please take a moment to review all 8 of the current LabourStart online campaigns and send off messages for any you may have missed - click here

Thanks!

I sent an email to them myself, and I got this response:

Dear Madame/ Sir,

thank you for your email to our CEO, Mr. René Obermann. I have been asked to answer you on behalf of him.

As a matter of principle T-Mobile USA never bullies or threatens its employees. Perhaps it would be helpful to provide some context in which to consider the state of employee relations in our company. T-Mobile USA’s status as a preferred employer is illustrated by the frequent best-place-to-work awards it has won throughout the U.S. Given these awards, and the great workplace they reflect, it isn’t surprising that 75% of T-Mobile employees have indicated in anonymous annual surveys that they would recommend employment at T-Mobile to their family members and friends. These are not the kinds of ratings and responses employees and independent entities would give an employer that mistreats its employees. These facts also illustrate very clearly that the union’s descriptions do not present a realistic picture of the actual circumstances at T-Mobile USA.

T-Mobile USA workers absolutely do have a fair chance to decide about whether or not to join CWA-TU, and T-Mobile USA does not interfere with employee attempts to organize. Instead, T-Mobile USA provides factual information to employees in a manner that is consistent with US labor law and international labor standards.

Those standards provide employers free speech rights which T-Mobile USA believes are important to maintain, particularly given the misleading information the union has communicated to T-Mobile USA employees and others. For these reasons, the CWA’s request that T-Mobile remain neutral is not acceptable. It is vitally important that employees communicate with their managers, and neutrality would prevent a wide range of factual communications between employees and their managers about union issues. Such a demand is neither practical nor acceptable to the management of T-Mobile USA.

Where a group of employees selects a union through the process established under U.S. law, T-Mobile USA will certainly recognize their right to collectively bargain on behalf of that group. However, it is ultimately the employees’ decision whether or not to support a union, and we absolutely respect our employees’ decisions.

Yours sincerely

Dr. Matthias Schuster
