What's it like there (politically, socially, etc). I've always heard that the Bay Area is filled with liberals, but I'd like to know if there's a sizeable leftist/anarchist presence there as well - specifically in Berkeley. I'd really like to get more involved in such communities, so any advice or suggestions you guys might have would be greatly appreciated.

UC Santa Cruz (which is where I go), is probably more down your alley with there being Leftists/Anarchists. Don't know much about the Berkeley scene, but there's a big collection of Anarchists (and other Leftists) in Santa Cruz.

I'm already heading to Berkeley in January, though (I was accepted for spring semester instead of this fall).

Damn, congrats, that's a nice school.

Can't throw an ice pick across the bay without hitting a Trot. Lots of trots. I like what Nin said. What's up in SC? Lived there for a while myself.

Thank you. I can barely afford it, though. :(

But really, who can (aside from upper class rich kids).

So jealous man.

I'm not looking forward to the first semester. I still haven't gotten my living arrangements set up (I have to have it all sent in by Oct. 1st), and I don't know how I'm going to juggle classes with finding fellow leftists - and I don't mean those who talk the talk but can't walk the walk. :glare:

I really want to get involved when I move there, the only problem is I don't know where (or how) to start. It will be kind of my first real foray into left-oriented action that goes beyond simple rhetoric.

Talk to Praxis, Jimmie Higgins, & The Red Son about bay area shit.

I know you are an anarchist, but the PSL and ANSWER do a lot in the Bay Area too.

I know one very good comrade in post grad at UC Berkley. I don't think the school has a large anarchist or anti-capitalist movement, but their are progressive/radical types there for sure. The East Bay has a lot going on though, so you might find more comrades outside of the school.

You will definitely find people to organize with, then your problem will be too much stuff going on and not enough time.

This was my thinking. I'm not aware of any specifically anarchist groups that are active on campus in Berkeley. There are definitely those operating off campus, though. I'd say a good idea is to keep tabs on events listed on Indybay and stuff organized by AK Press. The latter often hosts book talks and lectures and whatnot that'll help you meet people.

RCP is really active in the Bay Area haha!

Just get out an start talking to people, become an agitator at events. I did that down in Santa Cruz and met a lot of kewl comrades. As far as juggling time, lemmie give you a tip about college. There are three things you will want: Good grades, a social life, and enough sleep. You can only pick two. Choose wisely.

What's Indybay?

Edit - Nevermind, I just googled it.
