I'm looking for resources describing the approach to recruitment and propaganda taken by the Bolsheviks amongst the military prior to the revolution.

I can't recommend any specific works relating to the pre-revolutionary period (that is, besides glancing references from more general histories) but the keyword that you need is the Bolshevik Military Organisation. This was the party body responsible for agitation within the Tsarist military

Check out "Kronstadt and Petrograd in 1917" by Raskolnikov. There's not much in English. How much there is in Russian I do not know.
I once researched this question before launching an anti-war newsletter aimed at military personnel. There was not a lot done because of the draconian conditions in Tsarist Russia during the war (they drafted militant workers and sent them to die on the front). The Bolsheviks tended to have more influence and organization in the navy.

I think one of the issues of the Liberator http://www.marxists.org/history/usa/culture/pubs/liberator/index.htm had examples of propaganda they used after the revolution to undermine the German military, not the same as what you were looking for but closely related.
