I was given an old Japanese laptop by a friend from Tokyo. I recently installed Ubuntu on it, and it's working quite nicely. The only problem I'm having is that there is no audio output. From what I can tell, Ubuntu recognizes the internal audio card. I checked for proprietary drivers and the only one listed was for the old dial-up modem. Any advice?

What audio card do you have?
Obvious thing, make sure its not on mute, just saying.

No, it's not on mute. That's the first thing I checked. I don't know what sound card it has. There's no label on the computer with a model number. Now, 2 days after the install, the computer is running so slow as to be unusable.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

I formatted and reinstalled and it's working now.
